English vs Japanese?

i tend to watch english dubbed anime if i can find it.
most of the dubs i've seen have been really good in my opinion anyways o3o

YuYu Hakusho
DBZ
FMA
Inuyasha

Those are like, the only five animes where I loved the English dub better than the Japanese, Rurouni Kenshin and DBZ BY FAR. It all depends on how serious the production group is. There's potential for English dubs to be better...they just aren't.
 
Depends. For anime that I grew up with and watched on TV as a kid, I find it immensely hard to get used to the Japanese voices so I'll usually just put up with the dub. The only exception to this was Sailor Moon and even then it had been like 6 years since I'd seen it when I decided to watch it in Japanese. But Pokémon, DBZ, etc. all has to be English for me. @_@;;

Otherwise I don't really care. It's easier for me to get ahold of English subbed anime since it's usually released on a schedule quite close to Japan's and I tend to keep up with it that way but overall, I think I prefer dubbed. Yeah, Japan has a more interesting pool of talent to choose from when it comes to providing voicework. A lot of their VAs are still typecasted but at leas there seem to be more of them to typecast so I don't get quite so sick of people so quickly. It's pretty damn annoying to hear the same person in every anime released stateside but I've gotten to the point where I don't really care.

:/ I kind of got tired of reading subtitles. Most of the time I let my eyes wander and actually look at the art rather than what's being said and I enjoy myself more. I may not understand everything that goes on and I have to go back a lot because I'll find myself blanking out on entire scenes when I don't feel like translating (my Japanese isn't great and it sometimes takes a fair bit of concentration D:) but it's great to just watch the anime for once rather than read it. So I prefer my anime unsubbed and to get full enjoyment, I like it to be in English so I don't have to put any more thought into it than "ohay this is pretty cool" and then I just watch.

Of course, I never win when at an anime con, the person in charge of a viewing will go "dubbed or subbed?" The weeaboos always choose subbed. D:

(Also some Eng dubs are genuinely superior. Trigun? Ugggh what a gratingly horrible Japanese language track but I adored the English version. So much. ♥)
 
I go for the English dubs. I dont like reading subtitiles. DBZ, Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon had incredible dubs IMO.
 
I'm also one of those "original language is best"-people, but I can't say that's true for everything.

-Beyblade G-Revolution is one of those anime that I'd watch in another language than Japanese. For boys of 16-18 years old, the voices of the main characters are quite high.... Specially Kai's and Ray's. But I wouldn't watch it in English either... No, the best dub here, is the Italian one. Even if only understand Italian for about 50% (meaning I vaguely understand the idea of what they're saying), I'd watch it any time.
-The Wolf in Princess Mononoke is supposed to be female wolf, yet she's voiced by a man... wth? English dub has better voice choice here.

The dutch dub is alright, nothing majorly good, but I'm tired of hearing the same voice actors over and over again. I once tuned in to the Dutch radio and heard Misty doing a commercial. XD

English movies (animated or live-action) I watch in English.
Japanese movies (animated or live-action) I watch in Japanese.
I have no problem reading subtitles, as I have done it from the moment I could read (and started watching movies that weren't dubbed in Dutch). If I really like a series, I usually end up rewatching it a few times, so I notice details I missed on my first run during the second (with my sister) or third time.

On a side note, I'm a huge fan of Soundtracks... If you have a show (e.g. Beyblade G-Revolution, Pokémon, etc) with a good soundtrack in Japanese (any language)... sometimes the dub ends up ruining that one. D:

PS: I find that Japanese dub of "Under the sea" to be quite funny for some reason. XD Original is best though. :3
 
If we are talking about animes, then yeah, Japanese is better !
I have not seen many English dubs that actually were good, same goes for the french dubbing O__o

So like, Japanese is better, and I love the fact you don't really understand what they're saying if you don't know Japanese (which I do know, actually xD)
 
Well I think the English dubs are fine, I mean, we all watched them happily for years before watching it online in Japanese didn't we? Saying that, I never watch the English dubs anymore...
 
Recently I've been trying to watch everything with English subs. I feel It's a more ture translation then some of the dubbed stuff.
 
I prefer the English solely on the fact I really can't be bothered to read the subtitles. Sure I've watched some Japanese ones and yes they can be better at times, but you can have some fantastic English ones too. But for the Japanese I like the fact you can't understand what they are saying on hearing but you defy them by reading the subs. XD

That's not the case, oddly enough, a lot of fansubs that directly translate things miss the nuances and any colloquialisms. Translations often aren't as simple as directly translating word for word and most professional translators know this.

Seriously though, I would probably care less whether my anime is dubbed or subbed, really. Just as long as it's English. It's just more easily found with subs, so w/e.
 
I only watch one anime with the Jap dubs: FMA: Brotherhood. The english version just doesn't have that 'feel' to it.

Apart from FMAB, I find the english dubs of other anime pretty fine. Thus, jap only for FMAB and english for others. xD;
 
You are right, the English dub of DBZ is really a good one.

I prefer English dubs as I don't know Japanese~

Some are tolerable, some are not. Just because some of us may have been satisfied with watching a series as a child does not mean the dub was even remotely tolerable given the original work.

English dubs almost always lose or reinterpret those things. "Professional" subtitles tend to do a decent job, but some fansub groups really do a fantastic job of their translations.
 
With anime I grew up with, I usually enjoy the English dub because it's familiar to me. Like Pokemon...I can't completely get into the Japanese dub. Otherwise, I'll go with the sub, I enjoy reading them and hearing the original language.
