Experiments [PG-13]

"We could return to the house from before and rest. I think we need some after today."

Perhaps he was speaking only for himself right now, but Drake couldn't walk long in his current condition. He truly needed a bit of rest, or he could collapse. His sharp eyes, though still looking around just in case, were getting blurried.

"That's probably a good idea." Aura said, putting her hands behind her head. In all honesty, she needed to rest too. Her leg was really beginning to bother her.

I should probably take some time and look at it later. she told herself, shrugging. Sighing, she started heading in the direction of the place they had stayed the night before.

"How ya feeling?" she asked, turning her head so she could see Drake.

He didn't need to say any unecessary information. He was hurting, but his pride woulnd't let him say anything. Needless to say, he didn't want to say anything.

"I'm fine."

They were close to the house now. Drake looked around to make sure no one was looking. It would be a problem if someone noticed them.

All clear.

"If you say so." she said, putting her hands in her pockets. She wasn't a lie detector like Jeremy was, but it wasn't that hard to see that he didn't look like he was fine. "We're here." she said, stopping to stretch again.

Aura bent down to rub her leg, now it was just plain sore. "Damn." she muttered, standing back up straight and crossing her arms.

Drake looked at her, then at her leg. It was clearly injured.

"You should rest that on the couch."

Drake walked into the house. He went straight to the spot he was at before and sat down. He sighed deeply, closing his eyes for a bit. He wasn't sleeping, he just wanted to rest a bit.

Aura followed him. "I'm not who we need to be worrying about here. I've dealt with much worse." she said, leaning against the wall. "Are you sure you're gonna be alright?" she figured he was probably getting tired of her asking that, but she couldn't help it, she worried. "I mean, it's partly my fault you got hurt."

After saying that, she looked down at her MP3 player, shifting through the songs again. After finding one, and setting it on low, she pulled her backpack off, lifted her hat from her head, and shoved it in her bag. Then she tossed the bag on the floor, leaning against the wall again, turning her gaze back to Drake.

Drake opened his eyes and looked at her. He had almost never had anyone worry about him this much. It was kind of flattering, but unnecessary.

"I'm fine. Stop asking that. I've been worse as well."

He saw her take her hat off. He hadn't noticed her without it that much. Her eyes were always covered by it. He didn't say it, but he liked her look without a hat. He looked away, probably staring too much.

Aura nodded, smiling lightly. "You're right, I'm worrying too much." she closed her eyes, concentrating on her music for a few minutes. When she felt herself drifting off, she snapped her eyes open, rubbing them. There was no way she was going to sleep after the nightmare last night.

"Well," she started, "if you need me, I'll be here." she said, blinking away the sleep that was trying to claim her.

Drake looked at her. She was resisting sleep. He had done similar things before, but his reasons were probably different than hers. He watched her intently. He decided to drop it. He decdided to rest.

He closed his eyes, leaning back against the wall. He remembered the paper in his pocket. and took it out to add some notes from the battle that just occured.

Aura just stood there, listening to her music. She let their conversation die, not that there had been much of one to begin with. She crossed her arms and just stared at the ground, refusing to look anywhere else. After a few minutes, she got aggravated and turned her music off, taking the ear buds out, and shoving it in her pocket.

Over the past three days, she cried more than she ever intended to. Her leg was really hurting. She couldn't sleep, correction, wouldn't sleep. She was exhausted.

Aura plopped down on the ground, pulled her legs up to her chest, and buried her head in her arms. It was true, she'd cried plenty, and she didn't want to cry anymore, but she her only other choice was to scream, and that wasn't a very good idea.

So she took in a deep breath, and she let herself cry. And she wasn't just crying like she usually did, she let herself sob until her throat hurt. She would feel better soon, she would be sure of that.

Drake looked over the paper. He added the new abilities he had learned about Luphen, Eric, as well as the Materials. He began added until he heard something. She was crying. Why was she crying? What did he do?

Drake realized what must have been the problem. It must have been the leg.

"Here let me take a look at that. I didn't realize it was hurting that much. We can get you to a hospital or something. You should have spoken up if you had been hurting this much."

He walked toward her. A somewhat concerned look on his face.

Aura looked up, wiping at her eyes. She could only imagine how red her face must have been. She put her head in her hand and shook her head.

"It's not just my leg." she said, taking in a deep breath. "It's," she wiped at her eyes again, "I don't know. I'm mixed up. I'm scared. I'm really, really scared." she said, whispering by the time she reached the end of her sentence.

Drake froze in place. He didn't know what to say. He was helpless. He wasn't sure what to do, what to say. He just froze in place, helpless as she was crying. Drake had gotten passed the point of asking himself why he cared. He just didn't want to see her cry. He felt she's cried enough.

Drake knelt next to her. "You don't have to be scared. As long as you're with me, you'll be alright." Drake didn't know what to say, but he tried.

Aura wiped her hand over her eyes and smiled a little. She did the only thing she thought to do, she hugged him. She was still crying a little.

"Thanks, Drake." she whispered, trying her best to stop herself from crying, but was still failing.

Drake went red a little as she hugged her. He wasn't used to much contact with others, so he was a bit unsure of what to do. His hands were in the air, but eventually he patted her on her back. He didn't want to hold her because he figured he was doing a bad job at it.

"Uh...Ok, ok, but can you stop crying? You don't need to cry. I don't want to see you cry."

He didn't mind so much of her physical contact now. But he still didn't want to see her cry. He finally spoke again. "You should probably let go, wouldn't want to ruin your clothes with some of my blood stains..."

She pulled away, wiping her eyes again. "I don't care about my clothes." she said laughing lightly. "Again, thank you. It's nice to know you care."

She smiled and kissed him on the cheek again, like she did the night before. Then she leaned back so she was sitting on the ground again, leaning her head against the wall. Her eyes were getting heavy, but she pushed it away, turning her eyes back to Drake.

Drake got very red, very fast. He placed his hand on his cheek. He didn't say anything as he stared at her.

"You...er...uh..." Was all her could blurt out. He understood none of this. He looked at her with a combination of surpise and nervousness.

All he could do was just stare. He stared for quite some time before finally approaching somewhat close to her and sitting down next to her. He didn't know what he should do or say, so he thought he should pretend to be doing something else. He took out his paper, and pretended to look it over.

She giggled at his nervousness. She didn't usually have that effect on people, so she found it slightly amusing, but it also stuck her curiosity.

Aura turned her head so she could see the paper. She blinked repeatedly, realizing she didn't understand a word that was on the paper. She rubbed her eyes.

It's been so long since I've had to read anything, I forgot I was dyslexic. she thought, turning her head away from the paper. Trying to read it was giving her a headache.

Drake was determined to not make a fool of himself. He also did not want it to be completely silent, because that would be worse, and much more uncomfortable. He saw her looking at the paper.

"Notes..." He said quietly. "These are my notes on...never mind. I prefer not to talk about it right now." He was silent for a moment, then he spoke again, "...You have a nice laugh. I prefer it when you laugh than when you cry."

Aura blushed and tucked her hair behind her ear. "Thanks, it's a lot easier to laugh when I'm with you." she stopped for a second. "It's been over a year since I've laughed this much."

She glanced at Drake, smiling. She held her hands in her lap, twiddling with her thumbs. She took in a breath. "I'll try. I mean, I'll try not to cry so much. Sometimes, I either have to cry, or I have to yell."

She bit down on her lip. "Hey, Drake, can I ask you something?"
