Experiments [PG-13]

Drake kept his eyes on her while she walked up and put her Mp3 away. He watched as she fell down and began laughing. Although the room was generally dark, he could see her well, and saw that she was trying to contain her laughter.

You really are a strange one, you know that? he thought to himself. He noticed that she started looking at him. If it was bright, she would have noticed that he was red a little bit, unsure of why she watched him. He tensed up and finally said something,

"Why are you looking at me? And what are you finding so amusing?"

He scratched his arm, trying to look calm, but all the while wondering what she was doing.

Aura blinked repeatedly, letting his questions sink in. "Oh. I didn't realize I was stating. I apologize. As to what's so funny." she put her finger to her chin in thought. "Despite how, seriously terrified I've been most the day, I haven't had this much fun, or been this happy in a really long time. I mean, I don't hang out with people, ever. I'm kind of the social outcast. So I'm, I'm kind of glad to have someone around, who doesn't totally hate me." then she added as an after thought, "At least, I don't think you hate me."

Drake was silent for a while. She was in a way similar to him. He was a social outcast of some sort. Well, at least he was never approached because of fear. Nevertheless, he was usually a loner.

Drake had trouble to respond to these types of situations. He wasn't raised to know what they mean. All he knew was what to do to survive, and he had gotten by pretty well like that. He decided to answer.

"If I hated you, you'd probably be dead by now." He wondered if this was an acceptable answer to give. It seemed right by him.

Aura nodded. "That is very true." she leaned her head back, staring at the ceiling. "Someone's going to kill me at some point. It'll either be an Experiment, one of the people sent to kill me, or you." she'd accepted it by now. She was going to die. She didn't know how long she had until she died, but she knew she was living on borrowed time. "And by the way. I never properly thanked you for saving me back there. That kid would have killed me, there was no way I could fight fire." she shook her head. "So, thank you."

Drake looked at her. She really was different. "Don't mention it. Seriously, don't" Drake said. He actually thought in a way, they were even. He had been in a tight spot back in the diner, but didn't want to mention it again. He thought he should add something. He just didn't know what to say. He was lost a bit for words. He finally spoke again,

"You know, as long as you're around me...you're not going to die just yet. You're too valuable to me." He realized what he said, and attempted to revise it, "What I mean is that your powers are too useful to me to let you just die. That's it." He felt like the longer he talked, the more he said that he shouldn't.

Aura giggled. It didn't seem like he had much experience talking to people seriously. "I get it." she said. She put her head down for a minute, trying to bite back a smile, then turned her head back up to face him. "You know, you're not bad company." she giggled again. "Then again, that could be due to the fact that 'the heartless brat' doesn't usually get much company." she scoffed, remembering her name in school.

Drake listened as she talked and giggled. She giggled, to which he wondered why. Then he heard 'the heartless brat'.

"You calling me a heartless brat? You know that may not be the first time being called that, but either way, you've got a lot of nerve."

Drake was called heartless plenty of times before. He never took insult to the name, but was hardly called that to his face. This girl was either really brave or really stupid to do that.

Aura burst out laughing again, covering her mouth with her hand. "No! In school, I was 'the heartless brat'. I was talking about me." she was still laughing. That had just made her day. She shook her head, still trying to hold back her laughter, which was, of course, failing.

She fell back, her arms spread wide, staring up above her. Her back was against the floor and she closed her eyes. After a minute, she spoke, "You're interesting." she told him, still laying there with her eyes closed.

Drake watched with a bit of anger as she laughed, but then the anger dissappeared as she said it described herself. He was a bit embarrassed to have been put into that spot, but instead watched as she tried to control her laughter, which he actually found really amusing. He held back a smile of his own. He continued to watch her.

Interesting, huh? He had never been called interesting before. He wanted to say the same about her, but fought down that thought, and instead looked at her in silence. She was different. Different from anyone else he had ever talked to, or seen. He spoke,
"I'm Drake." He was sure he never introduced himself before.

She opened her eyes, and turned her head. "Took ya long enough." she smiled, "Luphen said your name during that little, cave encounter." she paused, "Oh, and sorry for throwing a rock at you. Kind of the best I could do at the time." she looked down, her smile disappearing for a moment as she thought about Luphen. He said he'd trusted her, but she highly doubted that was still the case.

She shook her head, no need to think about it now. For now, she'd deal with things as they came, and hopefully, her next encounter with Luphen wouldn't happen anytime soon, for her sanity's sake.

Drake recalled the events of the cave, remembering how he shot lightning at Luphen, and how she threw a rock at him. He would never have imagined that he would take on someone to travel with.

It's interesting how things turn out, he thought. Drake recalled previous memories of times he robbed a with a group of guys, and how afterwards, he turned on them for the rest of the loot. He had done that multiple times. He just wasn't the kind of person to work well with others. In fact, most people he met, he hated, and took pleasure in betraying them. Case and point on his new agenda to hunt down the Materials as well.

But this Aura girl was different. He did not want to kill her. And not just because he thought her powers were useful to him.

Drake watched as she shook her head. She must be deep in thought. Drake wondered what she thought about.

"You should probably get some sleep Drake. It's getting late." she said, standing. She dusted herself off and walked back to her backpack. She pulled her jacket off, putting it in her bag, then zipping it back up. She stood again, stretched, and yawned. She should probably try to get some rest herself.

She took a few steps towards Drake, crossed her arms, then leaned up and kissed him on the cheek. "Goodnight." she said, taking a step back. "I'm serious, you need to get some sleep." then she added, "and don't tell anyone I did that." she said, her face going slightly red.

Drake was tired and she was right, he needed to sleep a little because of what they would do later on. He was debating whether to go to sleep as she came over and kissed him on the cheek. If the room was lighted, she could probably see his face go bright red. He touched his arm to his cheek, unsure of what just happened, perhaps believing that it didn't.

He leaned back against the wall. Yea, like I'm really gonna go to sleep after you go and do that.

Drake looked up and thought for a moment. To his surpise, he smiled, not holding it back. Good night, Aura, he thought to himself. He decided to get in an hour or so of sleep. He closed his eyes.

Aura plopped back down on the ground, leaning her head against the wall. She continued watching him for a moment, smiling.

"Goodnight Drake." she said, then yawned again. She closed her eyes, and just listened. It was quiet outside, so she could hear everything sharply. She focused her attention on Drake's breathing. Soon enough, she found herself falling asleep, everything slowly fading away as she did so. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep sitting against the wall, her legs tucked to her chest, her arms resting on her knees, her head in her arms.

For the first time in a long time, she actually had a dream. She'd never slept long enough to have one. And when she did, they were usually nightmares, but tonight, she had an actual dream, an actual peaceful dream.

Aura jumped, opening her eyes. She was still a bit disoriented from her sleep, but it would pass. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and looked around. It took her a moment to remember where she was, and once she did, she sighed. She relaxed against the wall.

Her dream the night before had started off pleasantly, something she hadn't been able to experience in a while. Then, during some point of the night, it had turned into a nightmare. She should have known better than to sleep so long. She knew that when she slept more than an hour, a nightmare was bound to come out. Dreams show things deep inside of us, and sooner or later, her's always found away to make themselves present.

She turned her music back on, trying to push back the dream. She wouldn't start crying again, she'd done enough of that. She knew how to push things away, so she just had to do it. She closed her eyes for a minute, listening to the song through the ear buds. She had no intention of going back to sleep, not anytime soon. She opened her eyes to stare at the ceiling, but just sat there, listening and waiting, she was good at that.

Drake awoke from his sleep. From what he remembered, had no dream. Drake couldn't recall the last time he dreamed about anything. He sat silently looking at his paper, processing his next move against each Material, each Experiment. He had to be prepared. One false move, and they would kill him. He had, of course, an advantage in experience. Most of the Experiments and Materials were normal high school kids before they were taken by the Corp. He had been in situations of life and death before. He had also the luxury of the Materials thinking he was still on their side. He could use that. Drake stood up and started pacing as he recalled recent events.

Aura saw movement out of the corner of her eyes, and sent her gaze around the room. It seemed like Drake had woken up. She didn't speak up, or make her presence known. Her nightmare had tensed her up. She felt like crawling in a shell and never coming out. But she knew better, she couldn't just retreat into her room and ignore everyone like she used to. She had things to do now, like it or not.

Finally, after about ten minutes of keeping quiet, she turned her music to a low level.

"Morning." she said, hopefully loud enough for him to hear. She winced at the sound of her voice. She sounded like she wasn't really there, but quite honestly, she wasn't. She was still thinking about her nightmare, wishing it hadn't happened. She sighed, leaning her head against the wall again.

Drake hadn't noticed what she was doing at the moment. But no matter how he tried to focus on the coming battles, he was still a bit preocupied. She spoke. He could barely hear her. Drake stopped pacing and looked at her.

Even in the dimmly lighted room he could see her perfectly. He wasn unsure of how to answer, not totally convinced, or sure, of what happened last night.

He finally managed to answer her, but all he could muster to say was, "Dreams?"

Aura stood, leaning against the wall for support. She didn't realize how shaky she was until she was standing. She shook her head and looked at Drake.

"More like nightmares. But it doesn't matter." truthfully, it did matter, but it was her problem, not his. "Did you sleep okay?" she asked.

She crossed her arms across her chest and waited for his reply.

In all honesty, Drake hadn't slept this well in years. It was a calm sleep. He didn't worry. He didn't feel unsafe. He wasn't even paranoid. However, to relay this information to her seemed out of the question, so he merely replied with a nod.

Drake avoided looking at her, and spoke again, "Most likely, the Experiments and Materials are either around this town or not far from it. I believe some of them had living residence here, so I doubt they are far away from a 10 mile radius. However, I wish to find the other Materials first, and learn what I can from talking to them briefly. If they are together, I will merely ask them about their powers, hopefully I'll be able to get it out of them seeing as they still view me as an ally. Afterwards, we'll proceed to find the Experiments. There would be too much confusion to attack them first. What I need you to do is to locate them...when you're ready."

Drake looked at her, wondering why she wears a cap constantly.
