Famine in Somalia

I was on my way to La Banquise restaurant on Rachel St. in Montreal when I came by the MetroVision screen while waiting for the subway train to come while at Berri-UQAM station and there was news saying that Canada has offered $50 million to relief aid for help with Somalia where it recently suffered from famine (not enough food grown).

Are other countries like the United States taking action as well?

This thread is also to discuss the current status of Somalia's international recovery of the famine as well as to provide opinions of what is expected from the actions of the United Nations, its relief campaigns as well as additional aid such as non-governmental organizations, etc.

I happen to have read an article earlier this week that United Nations can't access Somalia itself because of how its politicians use political corruption and says that it forbids United Nations to enter. Unless the United Nations is aided by serveral military groups like the USAF, 2.2 million Somalians will have to walk far to reach refugee camps.

There are tons of countries besides Somalia that have the same problem, and every country - even the US - has a large amount of starving people.

Pretty much every modern country helps fight poverty and starving in their own and other countries.

Judging that the developing countries have such high populations, that doesn't surprise me too much.

Yet, the money spent on aid by Canada does. Any hints on what it will be spent on if it did get provided, as relief aid is pretty vague, as it is what it will be used on that will make the biggest difference? For example, if they were to spend it on food, that could push food prices down in the country, which could lead to those who did make a good crop into a fairly bad position as they depend on the price that they sold it for, and that would be less now. It's all winners and losers.
