A Soviet agrobiologist who worked on a project, involving the effects of temperature variation on the life-cycle of plants, which led him to consider how he might use this work to convert winter wheat into spring wheat. This process became known as "vernalization".

Robert Bunsen

A German chemist, who developed the Bunsen burner (with his lab assistant, Peter Desaga). Also investigated the emission spectra of heated elements & discovered caesium (in 1860) & rubidium (in 1861) with the physicist Gustav Kirchhoff. The Bunsen–Kirchhoff Award for spectroscopy is named after Bunsen & Kirchhoff.

An Indian American astrophysicist, awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics (alongwith William A. Fowler) for his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure & evolution of the stars. The "Chandrasekhar limit" is named after him.

Vladimir Vernadsky

A Russian mineralogist & geochemist, considered one of the founders of geochemistry, biogeochemistry & radiogeology. A founder of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (now National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). His ideas of noosphere were an important contribution to Russian cosmism. Awarded the Stalin Prize in 1943.
