Too bad there aren't actually writers like that, and that has never happened. And believe it or not, everything is not about you. This was a warning for fanfic reviewers in general to make sure that they present their advice in the most respectful way and are mindful of how elitist attitudes come off to other people. You're taking this way too personally for someone who doesn't care.

I've reviewed some "bad" fics before (ones with no spacing, terrible spelling/grammar), but that's never caused me to be rude or disrespectful to anyone. You can't justify that kind of behavior in a reviewer.

Wow. I think I need to direct you quickly to the LJ community, Marysues. Maybe they will shed the light of truth:

www.livejournal.com/community/marysues

You've never really read around ff.net, have you? Aye. To be ignorant and innocent o.o;;

no, I just joined FF.net like a day ago or something (exaggeration). But the fic I read was at some other forum. Also, there was a fic not too long ago (a parody, I think) about very harsh reviewers. So, when frostweaver said you reviewers here were scaring away newcomers, I thought it was approrpriate.

Still, though, there is no need to talk about writers who are making an honest effort to create a good story. That live journal that you've got linked up there is what I'm talking about.

I think the whole process would be much more beneficial to everyone in the form of a co-operative kind of thing where reviewers and fanfic authors work together to create some great stories. Most stories never improve by being bashed. It's like that old saying "Never look down on someone unless you're trying to help them up."

You don't think we try? I have beta'd several people, and offered to beta several hundred. The thing about most crapauthors is they consider themseleves immaculate, and have no desire to change, especially because some 'Simon wannabe' say you have to properly punctuate. If you don't believe me, I have actual e-mail to back me up.

That's interesting. I've never seen that before. Especially not with regards to such unarguable things as punctiation.

My dear boy, God bless you, and may you never lose such naivete and innocence in Fanfiction.net's world of self-righteous fledglings. I don't mean to say all of them are like that, but in some fandoms -- Pokemon included -- you get smacked with that sort of thing every day. Some authors begin to think they're godly simply because they get a few fans, though they fail to realize some people put fics with very little plot and respect for grammar on their favorites list. It gets fairly ugly.

As for your philosophy about reviewing, yes, it's a good idea to be kind, but you must remember that the more you sugar-coat your reviews, the more you inadvertently encourage them to make the same mistakes they make with their current work. (I know because I've tried both sugar-coating reviews and pure honesty on FFNet.)

After all, what would you rather hear? A lie telling someone that their fic was the best thing they've ever read or the truth that points out that some things just weren't good? But hey, if you would like a sugar-coated review, that's cool. You're one of many. You just can't expect it all the time, especially if you're going to go write for FFNet.

Sorry if I sound like I'm rambling or if I sound harsh, by the way.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, in regards to the "crapauthors think they're immaculate" comment, I'd like for you to read this.

You'd be surprised.

immature name to a cute little Flying and Grass type Pokemon. Very few ten year olds act above their age.

Also, this is following the ANIME, not the games. Ash's Krabby had one battle and evolved right off, and got a totally new moveset straight away, but look at how long he's had Bulbasaur. Pidgeotto took forever to evolve into Pidgeot, and Charmander didn't seem to be in too big a hurry either.

I made Hoppip learn Tackle, Sleep Powder, Absorb and Synthesis because, lets face it, who wants a Hoppip that can only splash water? Besides, as a shiny, she has to seem somewhat out of the ordinary.

Murkrow are rated as Johto Pokemon. If they weren't, they'd be in Kanto and would have been logged earlier. In any case, Ho-oh isn't a Kanto Pokemon, and Ash saw it outside Pallet Town on both occasions.

As regards Dan, Mireiyu's brother, well, Hoppip are underused at best, in spite of their cuteness and speed. Maybe he just wanted to keep in touch with his homeland and be reminded what colour they were. Hell, I've confused their colour before, and I practically COLLECTED the things at one point.

Thanks for your positive comments, but if you're gonna talk to me about my mistakes, please do so in E-mail and not reviews.

That on is pretty good. I have better, I just have to find them... I have like 600 messages to wade through...

I see where you're coming from. Maybe I should spend some time reading at ff.net...

But really, not sugar-coating is good. That's not what I was saying. I was saying that, along with the truth, there should not be an insulting tone or condescending remarks. Few will benefit from that.

If someone is taking a personal shot at you, I think that's the only time you have th eright to retaliate. Just because someone is sure they are right about something regarding prose is no reason to be mad at them and start a flame war. o.o;;

That's true. But what instances was frostweaver talking about then? With reviewers scaring away new comers?

EDIT: It's your choice, but she sounds like a Julie-Mudkip

Hmm...that's strange. Frostweaver's reviews are very objective and straightforward. I couldn't imagine someone being turned away from fic writing because of...um, well, maybe. I think that a lot of people (myself included) just do it for fun, though, and that's why most are not willing to put in too much effort to improve. I can say that one area that I will not improve on will be canonness, so I guess I can at least partially empathize. I have never liked the shows and have only recently picked up the game, so I'm pretty much out of luck in that department. That's different than grammar and spelling, though.

EDIT: What do you all think about the star rating system? What do you think its purpose is?

::shrug:: I don't like it as no one uses it.

Randomly...

Interesting how much the 'Fanfic Analysis' thread supports infodump... Gah... ::shivers:: Curse infodump and all who use it...

Oh, that explains a lot.[/sarcasm]

If that's what they're doing, I wish that they'd just put that up at the top so that I know to skip it, 'cause otherwise I'll be hurting my eyes and brain for nothing.

The thing is, they may say that, but then they expect loads of loving reviews from people.

If you're just writing for fun and don't wanna improve, fine. But don't expect the good reviewers(of which I am not) to pay much attention to it or to give it a "very good".

*shrugs* My experience may not be as extensive as, say, AOT's, but I DO know what I'm talking about. *remembers the five n00bs that he's attempted to assist*
