The thing is, some people confuse overused words with words that should be used. Like in my title, Blazing Dreams: Legends of Sinnoh. Sure, you can exchange a few words in the title. But words that reference places like Sinnoh and the like usually are just fine.
True, they may also be overused. But small touches like that are what emphasize that the story is Pokemon. And it also works the other way around. For a book (or movie) about WWII, there's usually some part in the title that shows that it had to do with WWII. This can be the case in just about every other genre of books or movies.
when it comes to doujinshi, there's very rarely an indication within the title that the story belongs to a particular franchise. Take this for example (there's quite a bit of side-boob showing, but it should be SFW nonetheless). Even though most fans refer to it as "Evangelion: RE-TAKE", nowhere does the cover say "Evangelion". It only says "RE TAKE", and there is no hint that this doujin is based off of Eva except for the presence of one of its characters, Asuka. Ignoring the fact that Asuka is a rather well-known figure in all of anime fandom, the manga seems to have been intended for people who have prior knowledge of the series, as that would be the audience it's trying to appeal towards. So long as there's a visual clue like that, making it even more obvious in the title would just be overkill. And really, I think trying to force a fanwork's basis into the title just comes off being really cheesy in some cases.... it could even prove advantageous not to include such a thing (though I doubt there's a soul alive who's never at least heard of Evangelion, or Pokemon for that matter, a person who never got into the series or never felt like giving it a chance could become interested in the cover's artwork, thinking it's just typical hentai or something, only to become a fan through the characters or concepts that they're introduced to. I heard several official copyright holders actually encourage doujinshi because of this).
Fanfiction's the same way. Sure, there's no visuals like with a manga cover, but ask yourself: where are you right now? A Pokemon forum. So even though there are some non-Pokemon fics around here (some of which are labeled to indicate such), you can expect a majority of the works to be based off of that franchise which you are more than likely a fan of in some way judging from your presence here alone. Even in places like fanfiction.net, they have categories, so the content should be obvious from the location alone.
