Filling Your Pokedex

So, I propose a question to see if anyone else plays the Pokemon games like I do.

How do you go about filling up your Pokedex?

Now, you may all think I'm silly, but I believe their are multiple ways. For instance, here are a few:

    I. Catch every single Pokemon in the game, including legendaries.
II. Catch every single Pokemon in the game, excluding legendaries.
III. Catch only the Pokemon you like or think look cool. Spot all the rest.
IV.Catch only the Pokemon you plan to train. Spot all the rest.
    V. Trade.

I roleplay my games to some guidelines that somewhat match the anime. I do not "catch 'em all". I do not catch legendaries. I only catch the Pokemon I plan to train and then try to spot all the rest in order to fill my Dex. Seeing as I'm a Fighting type trainer, that's all I go after usually. The only exceptions I make are for storyline catches (yes, I write little stories and such for my character. I'm thinking of trying to make a web comic as well.)

So, that's my question. Converse. :)

Most of them I get in the process of trading, even if I do not intentionally go after them they fill my dex none of the less. These days when I try and fill my dex I find stuff I don't have and go for that said pokemon. Most of the pokemon I obtain though are at random, through requests I have done assisting them in cloning and rare candying in the past.

Well, I used to trade a lot, so I got like, 400 in my pokédex.

However, the way I do it now is that every time I have an encounter where the little pokéball icon doesn't come up, I capture it. This can be problematic if I have a rare pokémon, don't realise, then leave my DS for a bit and come back to a trainer battle trying to capture it (I actually lost to Maylene trying to capture her Machoke).

    ^That's pretty much what I do!^
I've never tried to catch a Trainers Pokemon though

Anyway, I've recently started trading, so my main method is catching any Pokemon I don't have and then trading for ones I don't have as well.

The method I used to complete my HG Pokedex was a mix out of "catch every Pokemon with no Pokeball icon above", pal park transferring and trading. I've trained lots of Pokemon in the times of R/S/E and FR/LG, so I've already had lots of Pokemon to start, so I sorta had the feeling that it was doable!^^ And btw, I'm using these methods also to complete every other Pokedex, too!^^

I'm more of a III by the OP's criteria. The only pokemon I catch in any given game are pokemon that I plan to train for wifi teams, are pokemon I think are cool/cute, and my obligatory in-game team. :P

I haven't even attempted to "catch 'em all" since my Yellow version, in which I was short by one Venomoth. >:[

I completed my Pokedex in Platinum, but it really was a combination of tactics. As I initially played through the game, I was sure to capture every species of Pokemon normally found on a particular route, including in-game legendaries. After completing the game, I began to use other methods, including trading, taking advantage of swarms, using Pal Park, collecting Wi-fi event Pokemon, leveling up to evolve, and breeding for baby forms.

Since it's complete in Platinum, I'm not making an effort to complete it in Soul Silver. In there, it's basically Pokemon that I like/look cool. IIRC I'm only at 230 caught in there.

i just catch a poke if i havent already, or i breed em, or trade em, but i never really caught em all except for diamond, then i release and start again

i always try to catch every availible pokemon

I only catch the ones I plan to use in battle, there are some exceptions, though. Like my favourites and a few cool-looking ones. But mostly just the ones for battling.

I catch all the different Pokemon I can obtain within the game itself, including legendaries, then hook up with the other version to get the version exclusives.

I use any method possible. I have never filled up a dex before, but I'm planning to finish SoulSilver's, and then get all of the new Pokemon from Black/White. Once in a lifetime is good enough for me. :)

Completing the Pokedex has never really been a goal for me. I only capture Pokemon that I either will train or ones with designs I like. I always capture the legendary Pokemon too. So I'm pretty much a combination of III and IV.

However, I wanted to complete the Pokedex at least once, so I accomplished the feat in Pokemon Emerald using a variety of tactics. I went through the main storyline using my usual method of catching Pokemon I would train. After beating the League, I went around capturing Pokemon I could and trading for the rest (starting with the legendaries). If they were really close to their evolution level I used Rare Candies to speed up the process. I also breeded some Pokes in order to get their baby forms.
