  • Hey everyone! Just looking for words of wisdom and guidance on my team and the formation of it. I'm definitely still a novice when it comes to competitive battling so please go easy on me. Before X/Y I never really fully got into the competitive scene but I do want to give it a try. The team I currently have :

    Charizard
    Charizardite Y / Adamant / Blaze
    Heat Wave
    Flamethrower
    Rock Slide
    Fly

    Venusaur
Miracle Seed / Naughty / Overgrow
    Venoshock
    Sleep Powder
    Cut
    Petal Blizzard

    Blastoise
No Item / Bashful / Torrent
    Flash Cannon
    Hydro Pump
    Scald
    Ice Beam

    Jolteon
Magnet / Modest / Volt Absorb
    Thunder
    Volt Switch
    Thunderbolt
    Quick Attack

    Lucario
Expert Belt / Hasty / Steadfast
    Flash Cannon
    Aura Sphere
    Quick Guard
    Extreme Speed

    Scizor
Metal Coat / Calm / Technician
    X-Scissor
    Night Slash
    Iron Head
    Air Slash

(Only just evolved my Scyther into Scizor, I've been suggested to IV breed Scizor next ^-^)

Okay so...I haven't really done much to my pokemon's moveset's aside from Jolteon having Volt Switch and Blastoise and Lucario having Flash Cannon. I'm not sure what movesets would be feasible for them, I like to be as versatile as possible. I was thinking if I needed to opt out some of the pokemon I have in my team for other pokemon who would best cover weaknesses etc, but like I've said this is my first team build so any help would be very helpful ;w; .

  • EVs would be preferred.

An Adamant nature wastes away Charizard Y's massive Special Attack. If it wants to use Special moves, it has to use a Timid nature or a mixed set:
    -Fire Blast
    -Solar Beam
    -Focus Blast
    -Dragon Pulse/Roost
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Charizardite Y

    or
    -Flare Blitz
    -Fire Blast/Overheat
    -Brick Break/Focus Blast
    -Hidden Power (Ice)/Earthquake
    Nature: Naughty/Naive/Lonely/Hasty
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Charizardite Y

Since the Sun that Charizard Y brings may not benefit the team, (like not taking advantage of regular Venusaur's Chlorophyll ability) you might as well use Charizard X:
    -Dragon Dance
    -Flare Blitz
    -Dragon Claw/Outrage
    -Earthquake/Dragon Claw/Roost
    Nature: Adamant/Jolly
    EVs: 4 Def/252 Atk/252 Spe
    Item: Charizardite X

Blastoise is only good in its Mega form, IMO. Venusaur is only good either with Chlorophyll, or its Mega form. Since you can only have 1 Mega Evolution per battle, replacing them may be a better idea. Ferrothorn, Chesnaught, Gourgeist (Super Size) and Trevenant are decent Grass Pokemon to use, because of their good bulk, while Greninja fills in the Water slot, because it hits harder and faster than Blastoise:

    Ferrothorn:
    -Spikes/Stealth Rock
    -Leech Seed
    -Power Whip/Protect
    -Gyro Ball/Thunder Wave
    Nature: Relaxed
    EVs: 252 HP/208 Def/48 SDef
    Item: Leftovers/Shed Shell
    Ability: Iron Barbs

    Chesnaught:
    -Spikes
    -Synthesis
    -Hammer Arm
    -Stone Edge/Seed Bomb/Roar/Leech Seed
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 Spe
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Bulletproof

    Super Size Gourgeist:
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Leech Seed
    -Protect/Pain Split
    -Seed Bomb/Shadow Sneak
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/4 Atk/252 Def
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Frisk

    Trevenant:
    -Wood Hammer/Horn Leech
    -Earthquake/Rock Slide
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Rest
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/132 Def/124 Spe
    Item: Leftovers/Lum Berry
    Ability: Natural Cure/Harvest

    or
    -Substitute
    -Leech Seed
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Phantom Force
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/132 Def/124 Spe
    Item: Sitrus Berry
    Ability: Harvest

    Greninja:
    -Hydro Pump/Surf
    -Dark Pulse
    -Ice Beam
    -U-turn/Hidden Power (Fire)
    Nature: Hasty/Timid
    EVs: 4 Atk/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb
    Ability: Protean

    or
    -Spikes
    -Hydro Pump/Surf
    -Ice Beam
    -Dark Pulse/Hidden Power (Fire)
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Focus Sash

Jolteon is walled hard by Ground Pokemon, especially Golurk:
    -Thunderbolt
    -Volt Switch
    -Hidden Power (Ice/Fire)
    -Shadow Ball
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Choice Specs
    Ability: Volt Absorb

A specially-based Lucario should use its Mega form, but your slot is already taken up by Charizard. Physically-based Lucario is better in this case. Quick Guard only sees use in doubles/VGC battles:
    -Swords Dance
    -Close Combat
    -Extreme Speed/Bullet Punch
    -Earthquake/Crunch
    Nature: Adamant/Jolly
    EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb

A Calm nature wastes away Scizor's good Attack. None of its current moves benefit from Technician and its Special Attack is too weak for Air Slash. What's a Scizor without its signature Bullet Punch?:
    -U-turn
    -Bullet Punch
    -Brick Break
    -Pursuit/Quick Attack
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 248 HP/252 Atk/8 Spe
    Item: Choice Band
    Ability: Technician

    or
    -Swords Dance
    -Bullet Punch
    -X-Scissor
    -Brick Break
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Iron Plate/Metal Coat
    Ability: Technician

    or
    -U-turn
    -Iron Head/Bullet Punch
    -Brick Break
    -Pursuit
    Nature: Jolly
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Choice Scarf
    Ability: Technician

    or
    -U-turn
    -Bullet Punch
    -Pursuit
    -Brick Break/Roost
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 248 HP/112 Atk/148 SDef
Item: Assault Vest (4 offensive moves only)/Leftovers
    Ability: Technician

  • This definitely helps out a whole lot! Thanks so much! So opting Blastoise out for Greninja would be better? I've thought of that but I've heard how incredibly squishy Greninja can be in battle...But I can't say much since I've never really used Greninja much at all. :S

As for Venusaur, I kind of kept him in my team because it covered grass but could also do some poison damage should the other team have a fairy..But I always felt that maybe another pokemon could cover this position as well? I'll start to work on my Scizor right away!

As I said before, Venusaur is only good in its Mega form or with its regular form + Chlorophyll. Since your Mega slot is taken up by Mega Charizard X, you'll have to take Venusaur out. Other Poison alternatives include Roserade, Amoonguss, Crobat and Scolipede. Steel Pokemon also deal with Fairies, and one of the suggestions I pointed out earlier, Ferrothorn, also deals with them. Of course, Scizor also gets the job done.

    Anyway, more set suggestions:

    Roserade:
    -Spikes
    -Sleep Powder
    -Leaf Storm
    -Hidden Power (Fire)
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Focus Sash
    Ability: Natural Cure/Technician

    or
    -Leaf Storm
    -Sludge Bomb
    -Hidden Power (Fire)
    -Rest/Sleep Powder
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb
    Ability: Natural Cure/Technician

    or
    -Spikes/Toxic Spikes
    -Giga Drain
    -Sludge Bomb/Hidden Power (Fire)/Toxic Spikes
    -Synthesis/Rest/Sleep Powder
    Nature: Calm
    EVs: 252 HP/120 Def/136 SDef
    Item: Black Sludge
    Ability: Natural Cure

    Amoonguss:
    -Spore
    -Giga Drain
    -Hidden Power (Ice/Fire)/Sludge Bomb
    -Stun Spore/Clear Smog
    Nature: Calm
    EVs: 252 HP/28 SAtk/228 SDef
    Item: Black Sludge
    Ability: Regenerator

    Crobat:
    -Brave Bird
    -Taunt
    -U-turn/Toxic
    -Roost
    Nature: Jolly
    EVs: 120 HP/136 Atk/252 Spe
    Item: Black Sludge
    Ability: Infiltrator

    or
    -Brave Bird
    -Defog
    -U-turn
    -Roost
    Nature: Jolly
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Black Sludge/Life Orb
    Ability: Infiltrator

    Scolipede:
    -Spikes
    -Swords Dance/Toxic Spikes
    -Megahorn
    -Baton Pass
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
    Item: Focus Sash
    Ability: Speed Boost

    or
    -Swords Dance
    -Megahorn
    -Earthquake
    -Rock Slide/Baton Pass
    Nature: Jolly/Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb
    Ability: Speed Boost
