My emulator is being really weird, or maybe the ROM is, idk. But, it's not letting me save my game. If I can't fix that, then I'll have to drop out. Just letting you know.

You can always use save states if you're running on an emulator.
The command for it is usually ctrl+s.

Starter: Bulbasaur

Progress:
- Did all the beginning stuff: Chose Bulbasaur as my starter, got PokeDex, etc.
- Went through Viridian Forest power leveling Bulbasaur
- Beat Brock, Bulbasaur evolved at the end of the battle.
- Got to the Mt. Moon Pokemon Center beating the least possible amount of trainers possible. Purchased my Magikarp.
- Trained trained trained trained trained Magikarp. It evolved into Gyarados by the time I was out of Mt. Moon.
- Beat Misty
- Beat Rival
- Cleared out Nugget Bridge + routes to Bill's place
- Cleared S. S. Anne
- Had to soft-reset quite a few times before I finally beat Lt. Surge with Gyarados.

Another update on my monospecies run.

I made it through Rock Tunnel after a touch of struggling (way too many hikers in that place). I went on through to Celadon, defeating every trainer along the way. I decided to put off the gym until resolving things at the Pokemon Tower, so that I'll have a much easier time with it.

As soon as I got to Celadon, I bought 3 Thunderstones and evolved my Pikachu. I then proceeded into the Rocket Hideout, and easily defeated Giovanni. I then made my way back to Lavender town with the Silph Scope, renamed my Raichus, and saved.

There are no Onix in Mt. Moon.
Maybe you just fought trainers with Onix? They're common Pokemon among hikers.
