As HeartGold and SoulSilver's release gets closer, it dawned on me that I have never beaten Johto. I've played it, but never all of the way through. I'm going to, so does anyone have any tips on Starters, Gym Leaders, or anything?

cynadaquil gets you though the game pretty easy

totodile is in the middle of a challange

and chickorita it the tough one

I get to the E4 without problems with just
    Feraligatr (Totodile 3rd evo.)
Pidgeot (Pidgey 3rd evo. - can be replaced with Fearow)
    Sudowoodo.

    EDIT :
My recommendation is that you experience yourself. Try what you like. Don't follow up by what people say. You'll find your decision better than any other recommendation here.

I got through the entire game with a Kadabra (Psychic, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, Thunderpunch) and a Machoke (Cross Chop, Earthquake, Strength, Some other not important move)

As said above, you need to experience most stuff in the game by yourself. If you just want to do a run as quick as possible, use Cyndaquil as your starter, get Abra as soon as you reach Goldenrod (a big town after a forest, nearby is the daycare). Buy all the 3 Elemental Punch TMs in the Department Store and Solo the game with it. With insane offensive stats and very good coverage, there is no way to lose with that thing.

The only things you should watch out for are Whitney (Goldenrod's gym leader) who causes many players with her Miltank, and the rare dark type trainers.

Whitney and Karen was really the only reason I got my machop. Even though I had an insane Kadabra, I still got 1-2 hit by Houndoom with crunch. I eventually had to remove Fire Punch from his move set and teach him swagger instead, because I accidentally saved right before. It took me like 10 tries before the Houndoom hit himself in confusion 2 times in a row. Other than that, Kadabra sweeps the game.

I think you should pick Cyndaquil. It was extremely easy for me to run through the game quickly with Cyndaquil.

Just make sure you keep your Pokemon all around the same level range.

    Good Luck ^_^

Can't an overleveled Kadabra just sweep H'doom with Thunder Punch? That thing is so frail, it works even without the Kadabra being overleveled.

One would think. But he takes at least 3 hits if you beat every trainer in the game with Kadabra (and every event wild pokemon), and he kills you in 2 hits with Crunch.

Cyndaquil im pretty sure makes it easiest.Yea i just realized i never got past clair when i had the 2nd gen games cuz i was like 6 and couldnt figure out how to get her back into her gym.So im gonna try and beat Gold before the 14th

CHIKORITA is hard for the first couple gyms, but is easy to train.
TOTODILE is pretty easy to raise, but is kinda worth it.
CYNDAQUIL is hard to raise, but is really worth it when you get to Typhlosion.

as everyone else has said, Kadabra or Alakazam with pyschic and the elemental punches is pretty much all you need to finish the game
