I recently received an old copy of silver, and want to trade my team from Blue to it. However, I dont want to buy a new link cable. Is there a way I can substitute a different cable for the link cable?

Nope, as far as i know the only way you can do it is using a Gameboy/colour link cable.
Nothing else is made for data transfer.

Well, you could try borrowing a friend's cable and system. Though isn't Scyther only available in Gold version and Red version?
Scyther can be caught in the national park in silver and gold... I think it's only during the bug catching contest though.

Scyther can be caught in the national park in both versions.

I remembered that not long before I read your post. Still can't get a Scizor without another GSC game, though, because it needs to be holding Metal Coat, and held items didn't exist in RBGY, just in case the OP didn't know.

As for the cable, you can't really substitute anything unless you know how the cable is designed and how it transfers data. I wouldn't recommend trying to build one yourself.
