2nd Gen Gen 2 and the trip through Kanto

This is a bit of an ignorant question but I have never played gen 2 ( looking to do so soon). I recently went through Gen 1 and Kanto and I'm wondering if going through Kanto again in Gen 2 is worthwhile or is it just a nostalgia trip? Is there anything new and worthwhile? I understand you beat the original gym leaders and eventually Red but is there additional story worth checking out? Or is it pretty empty?

I'm asking cause having just completed Gen 1, the thought of going through old territory so soon doesn't really excite me. You know?

The whole map of Kanto is a little smaller, but pretty much every location is reworked, some aren't accessible anymore, few are fused together (Viridian Forest is now included in Route 2, for example) cities has new buildings and NPCs. There is also new storyline and overall I would say it's worth it to visit Kanto again.
