Here you will find a mostly complete breeding guide for 5th Gen games (Black, White, Black 2, and White 2) and 6th Gen games (X and Y). If there is something I missed or if you have a suggestion for the guide, feel free to post saying so but please follow the rules and don't post spam. Where are the Daycares located?

-In Black and White the Daycare is located on Route 3 and is easiest to get to by heading west then north from Straiton City. When you first reach the Daycare ingame you can only deposit one Pokemon at a time. To be able to deposit 2 Pokemon at once and to breed you must have rescued the Daycare Man from Team Plasma in Nimbasa City.

-In Black 2 and White 2, the Daycare is in the same location as in Black and White, but you do not have access to it until after you beat the Elite Four and then head east from Castelia City to reach it. When you do reach it you can then deposit 2 Pokemon at once to begin breeding.

How do I breed Pokemon?

-You breed Pokemon by placing two compatible Pokemon in the Daycare and then taking a certain number of steps to produce an egg.

-To be compatible, the two parents must be in the same egg group and of different genders. The offspring will be of the lowest evolution of the same species as the female.

-Exceptions:
-Not every Pokemon is breedable.
-When breeding with Ditto, the gender and egg group (with the exception of No Eggs Group) of the other parent does not matter.
-Some Pokemon must be holding an incense or a certain item to breed the lowest evolution of that species.
-There are two Pokemon who can be bred to produce another species. Nidoran-F can produce either Nidoran-F or Nidoran-M, and Illumise can produce either Illumise or Volbeat.

What Pokemon can and cannot breed?

-All legendary Pokemon, with the exception of Manaphy and Phione, cannot breed.

-All other Pokemon can be bred, even genderless Pokemon.

-Exceptions: Pokemon in the No Eggs Group cannot breed.

Which Pokemon can breed with which?

-There are what is called Egg Groups that divides all Pokemon into groups that can then breed with each other within that certain group. There are 15 groups in all, and some Pokemon belong to more than one group.

What makes Ditto so special when breeding?

-Ditto is genderless, but it can breed with any breedable Pokemon regardless of their gender. When breeding, Ditto acts as the opposite gender of the Pokemon it is breeding with. When breeding with a genderless Pokemon, Ditto acts as the female parent.

-In Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 Ditto can be found in the Giant Chasm in the Plains area and has a 15% chance of appearing in normal or dark grass. The Plains are found inside the Giant Chasm after passing through the cave. The entrance is located directly across from the entrance to the cave.
-In Black 2 and White 2, Ditto can also be found in the Hidden Grotto (or Hidden Hollow) within the Plains area of Giant Chasm. These Dittos will have their Dream World Ability.

What are incenses and what Pokemon can I get from them?

-Incenses can be held by certain Pokemon to produce baby Pokemon of their species line. Below is a list of each incense and which Pokemon needs to hold it and what Pokemon it produces when held. All incense can be bought in Driftveil City at the Market for 9600 a piece for Black, White, Black 2, and White 2.

What is the Everstone and how does it work?

- Everstone in-game →

- When an everstone is held by a Pokemon, it prevents it from evolving. When breeding with either of the parents holding an everstone, the parent's nature has a 50% chance in Black and White and 100% chance in Black 2 and White 2 of being passed on to the offspring. Only one of the parents can be holding the Everstone though or else it won't work properly, and it does not matter which parent holds it or what countries the parents are from. *Note: This has been changed since 4th Gen when the female or Ditto parent must be holding the Everstone and Pokemon from different countries didn't work.

- In Black and White an everstone is given to you after having traded 10 Pokemon with different IDs and talking to a man in a black suit on the second floor of the Pokecenter in Castelia City. In Black 2 and White 2 you can receive an everstone in Driftveil City. After entering the city from the Driftveil Drawbridge, head west then south and enter the only house there. Head to the 23rd floor and talk to the waiter there to receive the everstone. In Black 2 and White 2 you can also receive an everstone at one of the shops in Join Avenue.

- In both Black 2 and White 2, everstones can also be found on wild Pokemon. Geodude, Graveler, and Golem each have a 5% chance of holding an everstone. Roggenrola, Boldore, and Gigalith have a 50% chance of holding an everstone.

What are Natures and what do they do?

Natures will each boost a stat by 10% and decrease a stat by 10% (except for the HP stat for which no nature increases nor decreases). The five neutral natures don't give any benefits because the same stat is being raised and decreased by 10% at the same time.

What are egg moves and how are they passed on?

-Some moves on Pokemon can only be obtained through breeding. These are called egg moves. Only the male parent can pass on the move and only to the baby Pokemon if it can be passed down as an egg move. If the baby Pokemon cannot learn the move through TM/HM, level up move, or as an egg move than the move will not be passed down. In addition to egg moves, level up moves and TMs/HMs can be passed down. Like egg moves, if the father knows a TM/HM and the baby Pokemon can learn it then the move will also be passed down. Level up moves are different in that, in order to be passed down, both parents must know the move and the baby Pokemon must be able to learn it as it levels up, or else the move will not be passed down.

-There is also a certain order that determines what moves the Pokemon is born with. First comes the moves the Pokemon will always know at birth regardless of parents' movesets. Then level up moves if both parents know it, then TMs/HMs that the baby Pokemon can learn, and last egg moves if the father knows any. So in short, moves are passed on in this order:

-Moves known at birth → level up moves → TMs/HMs → egg moves

-If there are more than 4 moves being passed down then those that are passed on first are pushed out to make room for those that come next.

What is chain breeding and how does it work?

-Sometimes the combination of egg moves you want aren't so easy to obtain. That's when chain breeding comes in. Instead of just breeding the baby Pokemon you want, you might have to breed/catch the parent(s) first to obtain the combination of egg moves you need. For example lets say you want a Vulpix with both Hypnosis and Faint Attack as egg moves. First you'll have to breed/catch a male Glameow and level it up to level 17 so then it'll know both moves, and then breed it with a female Vulpix/Ninetales to get a Vulpix that knows both Hypnosis and Faint Attack.

-Some chains can be more complicated than this though, and some egg move combinations are illegal altogether. If there is no legal way (no use of external devices) to get the egg moves onto the same Pokemon, whether cause of egg group breeding problems or something else, then the combination is considered illegal.

-Since Smeargle is able to Sketch moves, it can be used to Sketch moves and then bred to pass on egg moves. This is sometimes the only way to pass on certain combinations of egg moves making Smeargle's ability to Sketch valuable to breeding.

What are abilities and what is Dream World abilities?

- Every single Pokemon has at least one ability and some can have two or three. Which ability the Pokemon is born with is random if it has more than one possible ability. Dream World (or DW for short) abilities are special abilities that are found in 5th Gen games only and are the abilities given to Pokemon that are caught in the Dream World or in Hidden Hollows. Only females with the DW ability can pass on the ability when bred with a male in the same Egg Group and the DW ability has a 60% chance of being passed on. Breeding with a Ditto will not pass on DW abilities and male and genderless Pokemon with DW abilities cannot pass on the DW ability. For non-DW abilities, the mother parent's ability has an 80% chance of being passed on and this is not affected by using a Ditto.

How do you hatch eggs?

- After you collect the egg from the Daycare Man, to hatch it you must walk a certain number of steps. The amount of steps you need to take depends on the species of Pokemon. Here is a useful link with the number of steps needed to be taken to hatch each Pokemon: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Egg_cycles.
- There are also ways to speed up the process of hatching eggs. Pokemon with the abilities Flame Body or Magma Armor will half the number of steps needed to be taken when included in the party of Pokemon.

What are IVs and how are they important?

- IVs is an abbreviation for Individual Values. IVs are randomly generated through the game's mechanics. Each and every single Pokemon in the game has IVs in each stat, ranging from 0 to 31 with 31 being the highest. A flawless Pokemon has 31's in every stat and is considered to be "perfect". It is nearly impossible to obtain a flawless Pokemon through normal breeding, however nearly flawless Pokemon can be obtained through normal breeding with lots of patience and effort.

- IVs are important are because they determine the overall stats of the Pokemon. A Pokemon with 31's in every stat will have higher stats overall than that of a Pokemon that does not have 31's in every stat. This is very important when it comes to competitive battling as almost every single player uses flawless or nearly flawless Pokemon on their teams.

- There is a character in the game that will tell you the approximate IVs of a Pokemon. The IV judge in the Battle Subway will tell you the stats that have a 31 in them and a general idea of its overall IVs. He can be found after beating the Elite Four and is the first NPC you will see as you go down from the stairs at the entrance.

- When shown a Pokemon, he will first tell you its overall value of stats and then which stats have the highest IVs. If he says a Pokemon's potential is "decent" then the total sum of all the IVs are between 0 and 90. If he says its "above average" then the total sum of its IVs is between 91 and 120. "Relatively superior" has a sum between 121 and 150, and "outstanding" has a sum between 151 and 186.

- The information above is summed up here:

"decent" - 0 to 90
"above average" - 91 to 120
"relatively superior" - 121 to 150
"outstanding" - 151 to 186

- After telling you the Pokemon's potential, the IV judge then will tell you which stats have the highest IVs and what range they are in. If there are more than one stat that has the same highest IVs then he will say the stats in order of HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, then Speed. If he says the highest stat is "rather decent" then the IV is between 0 and 15. If he says it's "very good" it's between 16 and 25. "Fantastic" is between 26 and 30, and "can't better" is 31, which is the highest IV possible.

What are Power Items and how are they useful?

- Power Items can be used for both breeding and EV training. In breeding they are used to pass down IVs from the parent(s) to the offspring, similar to how an everstone works for natures. If a parent is holding a power item, depending on which one they are holding, the IV in that stat will always be passed onto the baby 100% of the time. In this way, two IVs can be guaranteed to be passed down, one from each parent when holding power items.

- A list of the different Power Items and what stat they pass down:

- Power Weight (HP)

- Power Bracer (Attack)

- Power Belt (Defense)

- Power Lens (Special Attack)

- Power Band (Special Defense)

- Power Anklet (Speed)

- For an example, Parent A has IVs of 31/16/7/30/5/31 and Parent B has IVs of 31/9/11/31/25/0 and you want the baby to have IVs of x/x/x/31/x/31. You would give the Power Anklet to Parent A and the Power Lens to Parent B and every baby of theirs will have the IVs of x/x/x/31/x/31.

How IVs determine Hidden Power and what perfect IV combinations give what HPs

- Hidden Power (abbreviated as HP) is a special type move that varies by type and power depending on the IVs of the Pokemon using it. This is especially important in competitive battling as Hidden Power can be any type, except Normal, and can be used to cover just about any Pokemon's weaknesses since every Pokemon that can learn TMs can learn HP. Also, if the HP type matches that of the type of the Pokemon using it then the move will receive a same-type attack bonus (STAB). However since HP can't be Normal type, only Normal type Pokemon with Normalize as their ability can receive a STAB from HP.

- To find out what type of HP a Pokemon will have, this formula is used:

0 + 32 (if SpD IV is odd) + 16 (if SpA IV is odd) + 8 (if Speed IV is odd) + 4 (if Defense IV is odd) + 2 (if Attack IV is odd) + 1 (if HP IV is odd)

- As you can see from this formula, you must know the exact IVs of the Pokemon you wish to know the Hidden Power type of. After you know the IVs and have used the formula above and gotten a number, round that number down and then compare that number to the following chart to determine what type its Hidden Power will be.

- The power of the HP will be between 30 and 70 depending on the Pokemon's IVs. To find out what the power of the HP will be, this formula is used:

(U + V + W + X + Y + Z) * (40 / 63) + 30

- To explain how this formula works, if the IV of a stat can be divided by 4 with a remainder of 2 or 3 then the following numbers are used in place of their variables:

HP is U and equals 1
Attack is V and equals 2
Defense is W and equals 4
Speed is X and equals 8
Special Attack is Y and equals 16
Special Defense is Z and equals 32

- If any of the IVs when divided by 4 has a remainder of 0 or 1, then 0 is used in place of the variable.
To make this easier, if the IV is 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, or 31 then you would use the numbers above. If the IV is not one of those numbers then use 0 instead for that stat.

- After you get a number from the equation then round the number down to get the power that the HP will be for the Pokemon.

- There are other ways to determine the type and power of HP on a Pokemon. In game there is the Hidden Power checker who will tell you the type of the HP the Pokemon will have. In Black and White, the HP checker is located in the Pokecenter in Mistralton City. In Black 2 and White 2 the HP checker was moved to the Pokemon World Tournament. Outside of the game itself there is HP calculators and pokecheck.org, which will tell you the exact IVs and the HP type and power of the Pokemon. For more help with pokecheck click here.

- Name Rater: The Name Rater is an NPC that will allow you to change the name of a Pokemon with your OT and ID/SID combination only. The Name Rater can be found in Castelia City in the closest entrance on the left coming from Route 4 in Black and White. In Black 2 and White 2, the Name Rater was moved to the first floor of the Metal Offices which is located across the street from the Castelia City Gym.

Gen VI Breeding​

With the release of X and Y comes a new way of breeding. The way breeding works now is very different from how it has worked in previous generations. Old items have new uses and the mechanics themselves have changed. This post is to help explain those differences and hopefully to help breeders, new and old alike, to breed the perfect Pokemon.

Changes to Breeding in Gen VI​

Below is a list of new changes to how breeding works in Gen VI. If something is not mentioned here then it is still the same as in Gen V.

[a id]knot[/a id]Destiny Knot

Perhaps one of the most important items in breeding now is Destiny Knot. What makes this item so special is, instead of 3 IVs from each parent being randomly chosen, when one of the parents is holding this item 5 IVs from both parents are passed on leaving only 1 IV to chance. With this item breeding Pokemon with 5 IVs is much much easier and faster then in previous generations.

Destiny Knot is given to you by a maid in the second floor of the Hotel Cyllage in Cyllage City. It is also given to you after you defeat Beauty Aimee who is in the alley where Cafe Cyclone is in Lumiose city.

With breeding in 6th Gen comes a nice surprise. Whatever the Pokeball the mother is in is now passed on to the offspring. For example, if you caught a female Eevee in a Premier Ball and bred with it all of its offspring will be hatched in Premier Balls. This only works for female Pokemon however. Genderless Pokemon and Dittos do not pass on their Pokeballs. Masterball and Cherish Balls will not be passed on even if the female is bred in one.

All Pokeballs can now be bought at one place. The Poke Ball Boutique in Lumiose City on Autumnal Avenue sells all the Pokeballs.

[a id]HA[/a id]Hidden Abilities

Unlike in Gen V where only females with their Hidden Abilities could pass on the ability when bred with a Pokemon in their egg group that was not a Ditto, males can now pass on their Hidden Abilities too, but only when bred with a Ditto. Males cannot pass on their Hidden Ability when bred with a female.

Pokemon caught in Friend Safaris can have their Hidden Abilities. Also Pokemon in Hordes can have Hidden Abilities.

Both males and females can pass on egg moves now making lots of egg move combinations that were illegal before possible to breed now.

How To Breed For Perfect IVs​

So you've seen all these Pokemon that people have bred with 5 or even 6 31 IVs. If you would like to do the same for yourself, then this little guide is for you. Below is a step-by-step explanation for how to breed the perfect Pokemon that you've been wanting.

Items Needed:

-Destiny Knot
-Everstone
-Power Items
-Hatching O-power (not needed but recommended)

Pokemon Needed:

-Pokemon with Flame Body or Magma Armor
-Pokemon with Fly (preferably same as above to save spot in party for egg)

Recommended Pokemon:

-Dittos with 2 to 3 IVs with 31
-Synchronizers to catch parents if needed
-Pokemon with Cute Charm with opposite gender of Pokemon you want


The first thing you need to do is acquire the items and Pokemon you'll be needing for breeding. An Everstone is given to you in Geosenge Town by a scientist in the building behind and to the left of the Pokecenter. Power Items can be bought for 16 BP a piece in the Battle Maison in Kiloude City. A Destiny Knot is a must if you're going for five 31 IVs. Having a Pokemon with Flame Body or Magma Armor halves the number of steps needed to hatch an egg, and using the Hatching Power O-power cuts down on the time needed to hatch an egg.

After you collect all the items you'll be needing, you'll need the parents you'll be using. If you're wanting a Hidden Ability make sure one of the parents has it. Having the female with the ability you want will speed up the process since the female's ability is passed on 80% of the time. If going for a certain Pokeball make sure the female was caught in the ball you want. Each parent has to have at least 1 31 IV each. Having one of the parents already with the nature you want will also speed up the process. You can use a Ditto as one of the parents to begin with so having Dittos with 31 IVs is helpful. All Pokemon caught in Friend Safari are guaranteed at least two IVs to be 31 so catching parents from there is recommended. Also chain breeding if necessary for the egg moves you want beforehand onto the parents is handy making sure to pass along any IVs that have 31 in them.

Make sure you know which parent has which IVs that are 31 and give one of them a Power Item that corresponds to the IV that is 31. Then give the Everstone to the other parent that has the nature you want. If neither parent has the nature you want, then you'll have to breed until you do or breed the nature on from another Pokemon. When you do get the nature you want then attach an Everstone to that parent. Keep breeding until you get a baby that has the nature you want and more IVs with 31 than one of the parents. Replace the parent and carry the Everstone over and change Power Item accordingly and repeat until each parent has at least four IVs with 31 a piece. When you do, replace the Power Item with the Destiny Knot and keep breeding until you get a baby with five 31's then replace the parents. Then keep breeding those until you get the exact Pokemon you wanted.


An example of what was explained above to make it simpler to follow.

Say you want a female Bold Eevee in a Premier Ball with the egg move Wish and IVs of 31/x/31/31/31/31. First you'll need parents, one with Wish and the female in a Premier Ball. Wish can be bred onto Eevee through Togepi by using Skitty as a breeding "bridge". So you breed Wish onto a male Eevee and it has one 31 in HP. Then you catch a female Bold Eevee in a Premier Ball and it has a 31 in Speed and Special Attack. You give the male Eevee a Power Weight and the Everstone to the female and breed until you get a male with 31 in HP and another 31 in another stat. Then you replace the male in the daycare with the male you got and make sure to give the Power Item to the Eevee you replace it with. Then you keep breeding until you get a male or female with 3 IVs that have 31. Replace parents and give the Destiny Knot to one of the parents and an Everstone to the other. Keep breeding for 4 31's and replace parents. Continue breeding for 5 31's, replace parents, and breed for the exact Pokemon you want.

One thing though, RNG breeding in BW2 can't be done. Even though it's not exactly helpful to the general masses, it's still worth mentioning.

You can catch a Snorlax on Route 7 and breed it to get a Snorlax. Follow this guide (though it'll take a while if you start from scratch) and eventually you should be able to breed a Munchlax with 5 perfect IVs.

But I came back to post that I found a way to get extra Destiny Knots.

There's a girl named Beauty Aimee, in the alley where Cafe Cyclone is, in Lumiose city. Sometimes she doesn't show up, but she will show up after battling other trainers.

She gives you a Destiny Knot when you defeat her.

Just thought this info would be useful in the guide. =]

She gives you a Destiny Knot when you defeat her.

Alright, so I'm pretty new to the "Selective Breeding" scene, but I'm taking it step by step, and I'm really getting the hang of it.

But I'd like some input to my progress. I'm trying for a perfect Charizard.

Right now I have in the Daycare:

Ditto with max Attack and Defense, holding Power Belt (Defense).
Charmander with max HP, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, holding Destiny Knot.

Destiny knot is sure to pass 5 random IVs from Charmander, and Power Belt ensures Defense is passed from Ditto.

Some of the offsrping only have 2 max IVs. I don't understand that, though, because they should have Defense, and 5 others from Charmander. And Charmander has more than one max stat. Some of them DO get max stats, though.

So my question is: Why do some of the offspring only get 2 max IVs, when there are clearly more than 2 to be passed down? And why do SOME of them get 4 max IVs?

Where do I go from here?

The Destiny Knot and Power Items do not work together, the effects are not combined. Also, the destiny knot does not transfer 5IV's from the parent holding it. It transfers 5 random IV's from both parents.

So basically, I need to have two preferred parents, with as many max stats as possible, then just breed the crap out of them, and hope for the best.

Hmmm.....I had one parent hold the power band who had perfect special defense....it only got passed on to 1 offspring out of 4 so far......is there a reason or do I just suck that badly at breeding? :P Also, without the destiny knot/ power items....would the IVs be completely random (i.e., the IVs of the parents would have no effect on those of the offspring?)

Thanks, that makes more sense. The other parent was holding a power item too........the guide kind of makes it sound like you can use two power items at once......at least how I read it.

So......I guess that means that without items the other 3 IVs are chosen at random?

Yes, the other 3 IVs that are not taken from the parents will be completely random.

Alright, I have a question. I've been breeding for a bit and have 3 pokemon with 5 IVs, it says "outstanding", "greatest potential is HP, but Atk is good too, Sp. Atk is equally good, Sp. Def seems just as good, and its Spe is good, too" and at end of the text it says "it simply can't be beat". Does that mean they're all 31 or do I need to start over?

Yes those IVs have 31 in them so you would have 31/31/x/31/31/31 for the Pokémon you listed.

Is it true that egg moves can be passed on from the mother in gen VI? I'm wondering because it would be nice for a certain pokemon to have multiple egg moves that each require different fathers.

Yes, both males and females pass on egg moves in Gen VI now.

With hidden abilities, I guess we only find out if the offspring will have the hidden ability in the thick of battle - is it still a 60% chance of the progeny having the hidden ability of its parents? What percentage of pokemon has their potential hidden abilities of any given species?
