Because it created the world with its non-existent thousand arms.
 
Arceus came in a time befor the universe was made, pure chaos, it created the other god like pokemon(dialga/palkia) , and thus giving pokemon and everything life, just like a diety...

It is know as "The original one", only pokemon to have the ??? type, and able to become any type. Also byy statistical average, Arceus is the strongest Pokémon...
Arceus may be a reference to the Chinese mythical creature, the Qilin. Its myth is nearly identical to that of the pangu, the Chinese creation deity.

So that is why Arceus is the "god" of Pokemon.

Ok in chinese mythology, Kirin ,or Qilin, was depicted as a giraffe in the ming dynasty, Arceus if you compare them, looks like a giraffe in almost every way... Majestic neck and body structure. Even though in hierarchy of mythological animals, Qilin is ranked third, while arceus at the moment is first, so that's a difference that may have started your question. Also in the ming dynasty some depictions of it are very versatile, just like arceus's multi-type, again goes with the multi type, is the multiple amount of colors qilin had on it. Basically arceus is mainly based on Qilin for the look, and it's story is of Pangu really..

Now remember arceus is believed to be based off of Qilin, not really true facts, so believe what you wish to believe.
Hope this isn't really intimidating, about a month ago I did deep research on arceus, and have learned a lot about it actually... Very interesting stuff. :D Hope I answered your question...

Also BlueEew, you can find Arceus's name, deus "god" in latin, so there's more why arceus is our "god".

I don't really believe he's "God" of the Pokeverse. I mean, what kind of "God" can get captured by small, circular, machines? Not to mention how the Pokedex is supposed to know about the creation of the universe =/

How can you not believe he is the god, he is even called the "Original one"...
created time and space, created feelings and mind, and pokemon to shape the land, kyogre of sea, groudon of land, and regigigas to moved the conintents...
And at the moment there is no legal way to capture arceus, so he cant be caught by these machines....

Even in the movie it says how dialga and palkia are god like, and who created them, arceus, have you even heard of the story of pangu? if not Read it.

And you can bet in the anime he won't be caught... :/

This goes back to the whole pokemon state of mind where science has overcome pokemon legends. I guess if you study them enough, you find a way to deal with them =P

Well, all that info about him creating stuff comes the Pokedex. A man-made machine. How are humans supposed to know about the creation of the universe. Nintendo might make it seem like he's the "God", but I believe he's just another Pokemon, albeit more powerful than the rest.

Legendaries in the anime never get caught. Ever.

We know that Arceus is ingame. We know that for a fact. We also know that he can caught e.g. all the "semi-legit" Arceus who were caught at Sky Pillar. Therefore, he can be caught by Pokeballs.

Until I actually see some proof (Movie with Arceus, episode with Arceus, showing his creation/god powers), I stand by my opinion.
 
Well, my belief actually started back in this forum. I was reading about an Pokemon vs. DBZ thread. People kept bringing up Arceus, who supposedly made the universe, until a guy brought up that the Pokedex said that. How was the Pokedex supposed to know that?

BTW, Pokemon won. Palkia and Dialga beat DBZ with their hax space powers.

I know, and I respect your opinion, but of course he has to be cuaght, as with every single pokemon ever, but something arceus has no other pokemon has, something un-obtainable the "???type"
Yes it is ingame and it can be caught with hacking and such, but gamefreak and Pokemon have to let every pokemon be catchable/obtainable for the entire goal of the game! to complete the dex. :P

If you believe he isn't godly or god? who do you think is?

And there is proof, the sinnoh library, as "the original one" created "space & time" how can you not be god doing that...mew was fabricated by arceus as he had to go to sleep from creating the univerese.
Arceus is proven and defined as "The Original One" who do you think is befor that? hmm? Just wondering that...

I dont see how it can't be the god...I just don't...only real argument i've heard is mew, well did mew come befor arceus, no. Arceus was the first egg and pokemon, it created mew, nuff said.

A book written, once again, by humans. How are the humans supposed to know that Arceus created everything? Were they there at the time of the Pokeverse's Creation? Arceus was never proven to be "God". The only supposed proof we have are the Pokedex and the books, which were made by humans, which brings me back to the last sentence.

Arceus going "Nyah Nyah, I'm God and aren't!" before fighting you?


If there's Human Ghosts, Psychics, and Animals that breathe fire and fart lightning, what makes Arceus being a deity so strange?

It's based off of a hypothesis formed carefully with small clues leading up to it. Just like different religions in the real world.

If the world of pokemon were to be layed out next to ours, you would see many similarities. If the world of pokemon were real, who knows, there may be some people who believe in something different, just like our religions.

It's gamefreak's way of creating pokemon to resemble ours subtley.

Arceus proving he's god by doing something 1337 in a movie/anime episode. Then I'll believe he's actually "God".
