Good rival or bad rival?

What do you guys prefer in a strory, a good rival or a bad rival?

Gen 1's rival wasn't really that bad he was just rude and really eanted to beat you, kind of a balance between the extremes of gen 2 and gen 3.

Gen 2 had a pretty nasty rival that punches you in the face when you meet him but then you make him good which is kind of sweet.

Gen 3 had a nice rival who didnt even get that strong, and you had wally who was sick so you felt bad for beatign him.

Gotta have a good mix if the characters are well made then the Rival wont be one dimensional. In other words, if you can label them into either catergory they're probably a boring rival eg. The gen 3 Rival

Yeah, I agree. The rival should be balanced, but can still be good or bad in nature. The Gen 2 face punch was actually memorable, so giving them a personality is key. Don't just want it to feel like an inconvenient trainer battle. Then it's just a waste of time.

I'm a fan of both types of rivals. I would like to see more of where you have a fun but competitive friend rival, not like a creepy stalker (like the rival who seems to be your friend and obsessed with you) character. Then I would like to see the rival who is just bad to the bone and their only involvement with you is when you bust in and foil their plans to be evil or just be a jerk in general (Mind you it's best if the rival in this case is not involved with an evil group, just make him his own kind of bad; bonus points if he's so bad that he foils the evil teams plans in order to propagate his own evil shenanigans).

That's a cool idea for a Rival concept, your rival wants nothing to do with you, but you are star struck by them so you follow them around the entire game in a creepy stalker like fashion. You could use Match Call to find them and track them down, like a real stalker! lol
