Graphics Driver update

    I decided to update my graphics card (NVIDIA 9500M GS) driver earlier today. In fact I started a few hours ago and it's STILL installing. It says it's "Installing display driver components". My question is, how long should this actually take.
    Just so you know, Task Manager says it's still running and is using 100% CPU power (opening this page took long enough).

    Seems to me like it's either stalled or frozen, but since you said it's still running in the task manager then idk, All i can suggest is canceling it and trying again, if you did it from the device manager, try manually installing it this time and see what happens. Installing a driver isn't suppose to take that long, really. Have you been having other problems installing anything? And why it's taking up 100% of your CPU is beyond me.
     
    I'll try cancelling it, but I haven't had any problems installing anything else :\

    EDIT: Well it cancelled instantly, but for some reason I'm apparently still using 100% CPU. God knows why though.

    I guess I could try again tomorrow.
     
    whats your system specs and i can ask someone i know right know if you want

    What's showing up as your most CPU using program in the task manager?

    Also, try rebooting before you try again, maybe it will work.

    According to task manager I'm still using 100% CPU, but the CPU of the processes don't actually add up to 100 :/. Anyway most usage is msiexec.exe, it seems to jump between about 45 and 50.

    Well, if your CPU is hitting 100% then it sounds like you have a virus that is pushing it to the max.
    That is just speaking from experience. Do a virus scan and see what it brings up.

    As for the graphics update, it will be due to the CPU hitting 100%. I think.
    Scan the computer, restart and try again =]
     
    it might not be a virus, do a malware scan cause internet pages can bring them in and do stuff like that. and about your grafics card take it into a techy and overhall you computer.

    Overhauling his computer isn't gonna do anything, all he's trying to do is update his graphics card, lol. I'd suggest doing what Alinthea said, if you don't have a virus scanner download Microsofts, just search for "Microsoft security essentials" on google, and do a quick scan, also get spybot search and destroy, if you want. And how much memory do you have? a gig or two?

    It seems rather weird that it's taking that much memory up, has your PC been acting any weird lately, before you attempted to update your card? If it's been acting up then it's most likely a virus like Alinthea said.
     
    msiexec is the Microsoft Installer process. Sounds like the installer disappeared, but didn't actually exit. It's probably still trying to install.

    And in case you didn't, I recommend either getting your video drivers from your manufacturer website or from the NVIDIA drivers page (try from your manufacturer page first, theirs might be specialized for your computer).
     
    1. Just because your CPU is maxed does not, by any means, mean you have a virus.
    2. How much RAM do you have?
    3. Also, do as twocows said and get your drivers from the official website/manufacturer. Do not get them from a driver program or filehippo/rapidshare/etc.
     
    Nothing about your post (OP) strikes me as unusual. It can take a seemingly long time for something to unpackage and install, sucking up the CPU's cycle time all the while. If you terminate the process the CPU will still for whatever reason have its time taken up and will be fine after a restart.

    Just give installers however long they need since "it's done when it's done", which can involve over ten minutes of the bar not moving.

    Virus can hasn't brought anything up, so I guess that's not the problem

    No, only during the update. It's been fine before and after I attempted.
    Also, I have 3 gig of memory.

    That sounds like the most likely answer, and yes I did get it from nVidia

    Believe it took more than 10 minutes. The installer spent about... 3-4 hours? without moving at all.

    By the by, I didn't get a chance to retry today, so hopefully I'll have time tomorrow.
     
    This DEFINITELY intrigues me. Can you create a DxDiag?

    XP - start/run/dxdiag let it run its course
    Vista start/search/dxdiag let it run
    Windows 7 start/search/dxdiag let it run
