Whats the deal with the GS ball?

When placed inside the Ilex Forest Shrine, Celebi will be summoned. They put a lot of emphasis on the GS Ball in the anime series, but after it was given to Kurt, it was dropped out, never to be heard of again.

It was basically a bait and switch to make people watch the Jhoto saga, and the primary reason alot of people over at Serebii hate the Jhoto Saga so much. Even the Narrator hinted that they were going to reveal what its deal was eventually, but of course it didn't happen.

So as far as the Anime goes, it was just a pointless miscellaneous item that does nothing at all and serves no purpose other than to waste a year of someone's life and give the show an excuse to axe Misty.
