I'm getting a guitar for my graduation present, and I want to know what is the best kind I should get? It's going to be accoustic and under 500$. I also need to know whether I should get nylon strings or steel. ALSO! How I can tell if the guitar is good or not. I'm for guitarists to answer these questions.

Steel strings seem to last longer than nylon strings.. To tell if a guitar is good or not, you have to go by the make. If it sounds a bit funny, you need to tune it to your preferences. ~Dignity

GuitarNoise (a very good guitar site, IMO) has tips on how to get a guitar, how to play it well, and even has song lessons for you to try.

    Happy picking!

As for a good store to get the guitar in, try Guitar World. They have a large selection and helpful staff, who you can ask all your questions! ^^

I dunno about accoustic guitars, but you can get a good electric guitar package for maybe less than $200. I got a B.C. Rich "Metal Master Package" for $168. Had Bronze Series Warlock, small amp, case, 3 picks, and a back strap. I got that at Guitar Center.

I dont know much about accoustic guitars, but if this is your first guitar, then I recomend this: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/511192/

Well, since you're just starting out, I would suggest NOT spending 500 dollars on something that you're beginning with. It's best to work your way up, espically if you just stop playing one day.

Nylon strings are more often used to play "classical" music, or classic rock, things like that. If you're looking for more of a "modern" sound like acoustic songs you may hear on the radio, then you'll want to get steel strings.

To tell if a guitar is good or not? You'd have to know and understand all of the parts on it. Neck, keys, pickups, hollow body, ect. Once you get into it though, you'll quickly pick up. Other then that, you want one that sounds good, yes.

If you change your mind and plan on getting some kind of electric guitar, check out the beginner package deals. That way, incase you decide you don't want to do it anymore (believe me it gets frustrating and many people quit) you didn't waste hundreds of dollars on something that will sit in your corner for the rest of it's life. Try a Fender Squire package, you get an amp, guitar, gig bag, picks and even a tuner I do believe; all for around a $150-200 (American coin).

As for a few good acoustic brands. If you're looking to spend top dollar, Ovation. Fender's are nice, but my god. An Ovation is an item straight from god's hands. Quality, and it sounds amazing.

    Hope I helped somewhat. =)

I have a guitar with steel strings. I will tell you this if you play the guitar too long with steel strings your fingers will bleed. But mine haven't And I decided if I stay on the computer my skills with the guitar would be gone soon. So that is why I'm going to start my own band.

Heh, you're not the only one with black and red fingers... =P

I got two cuts from my acoustic guitar while I was trying to play this song which was in a fast tempo... let's just say that it's unpleasant... though steel strings last long... they're pretty good for beginners, too... well... for me... XD

The only thing that sucks with steel strings is when you first string up your guitar and they sound all twangy. =(

    nylon strings or steel
well if you dont want your hands to bleed (according to my father's stories) nylon would be the one to go with. But then nylon strings sure make a dent in your fingers. The best thing, get a half accoustic half electric guitar and your life will be a LOT easier. Believe me, I'm the owner of one and I'm really happy w/ it. I even ditched my original nylon string accoustic.
And about the good guitar thing, my dad could tell you some good stuff if only he weren't busy with that electric screwdriver of his. Maybe I'll catch him later. You wont be sorry.

Well, I do know a lot about stringed instruments. I have grown up playing with violins, cellos, and violas. But I don't actually play one ^^;. I self-tought myself how to play the sweet potato ocarina, which is a bit easier than the guitar, for only 2 months and I have already amazed crowds. My mom says if take on the guitar as well as I did with the ocarina, then in 3 or 4 years I'd be really good.

Well, I haven't seen any Acoustic guitars with nylon strings... o.o; I would recommend a (crappy) beginners guitar package, since it's more cheaper by the package, and they come w/ spiffy stuff. Prepare for the aching fingers. xD

I've heard Squire is horrible, but I dunno. Ibanez is pretty good, Fender is like... the best, Ovation is good, but I couldn't get used to the weird back. I myself, I've got a Yamaha, and though I've heard that it's horrible, it works well for me. xD

Anywho, I would recommend getting a package.
