could someone specify, or laugh with/at me, as to why in FR gyarados is classified as a water/flying type?

seems....strange to me. havent checked any other versions.

    :)

Because he is a water/flying type.

    oh okay okay.

sorry, i never noticed it before and naturally assumed he was a water/dragon type.

is he compatible with any flying tm's?

    haha

Gyarados is a water/flying type because he is based off the Flying Carp, if you don't know anything about Golden Week, then my answer ain't gonna be of much help

I've quite frankly got no idea, but it suits me just fine, as I use Gyarados quite a lot.

Haha, i know, it's wierd. Some types for pokemon are ones you wouldn't expect, but as for Gyarados, i hate it!! The type matching completely owns my Blaziken and Infernape >.<

The others are correct -- Gyrados has always been a Water/Flying type. I have gotten into many, many arguments since 1998 about this because no one believed me.

But yes, it's no mistake... he's always been that way.

He is a water/flying type because Gyarados is based off a myth that if a karp were to jump over some gate or waterfall it would turn into a dragon. Thus you get flying type. Its something like that anyways.

BECAUSE IT'S BEEN THAT WAY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME!

But in all seriousness, it has always been that way.
    I often question it though.

Yeeeup. It's always been that way, and no, there are no flying-type TMs that the juggernaut is compatible with.

"Because it's always been that way" is not really a good answer when someone asks you why something is the way it is. Anyways, the only reason I've heard is the same reason Autumn mentioned.

is he compatible with any flying tm's?

I suppose I am rather late with responding to this, but oh well.

In the first generation, Gyarados actually worked as a mixed attacker. His special attack stat in that generation was equal to Mew's. In second generation games, he was used almost the same way, just with slightly different attacks. Still, no flying moves were placed on him.

In third generation games, people saw it fitting to give him Hidden Power (flying type, of course). This was almost useless in-game, though, since one could almost never get the right type. Even then, the power cap for it was 105 on Gyarados, and that was just as difficult to accomplish (IVs).

In fourth generation, though, I guess they finally got around to wanting a flying move on Gyarados. On Platinum version, both Gyarados and Magikarp can learn the move Bounce via move tutor, a physical flying attack with both power and accuracy of 85 (of course, it has a power of 127.5 when used by Gyrados, though).
