Hacked Rom help

Hi guys. For a while now I've been thinking of making my own hacked rom, and so I've thought about ideas. They were a mess, but finally my ideas are coherent, and I'm ready to start. The problem is, I'm completely new to the hacked roms thing. Could you guys please give a beginner tips, as well as what I'm going to need?
