I really don't like Hatsune Miku. Don't get me wrong, I think that Vocaloid is a really clever program, and I think it's great how some people can make nice-sounding songs with it. But I hate Hatsune Miku. I hate fetishized moe characters that objectifty girls. I hate what characters like Hatsune Miku are doing to anime and Japanese culture in general. Every time I type in one of my favorite songs on Youtube, and I see a Vocaloid remix with Hatsune Miku dancing idiotically in the video, I fear for humanity.

Oi, just cuz Miku's popular doesn't mean she's a moe girl bent on objectifying girls around the world...... also....i can understand how Miku affects anime culture, but not so much Japanese culture, well, besides moving supercell into the professional music industry. It might be about now to say anime culture =/= Japanese culture. Also, Miku Miku Dance songs are usually cuz there's already a dance out there :p

Incidentally, feminists happen to be the reason some of the better visual novel companies (minori, Visual Art's) are blocking non-japanese IPs

but ya, out of rage mode

Favorite songs include: Saihate, Conbini, SPiCa, anything ryo/supercell, The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku, Romeo and Cinderella, Soar, Electric Angel, My Time (my first miku song) and.and. a lot more

I really need to stop spending so much time in nico...

The "I sang it" versions of these songs are pretty awesome too

your post was essentially a ripoff of mine!
    (or was that intentional?)

    also, @Jolene:
yeah, way to rain on everyone's parade
you're only seeing one side of the whole vocaloid movement going on here; an insignificant side, at that.
why don't do some research before throwing out hasty statements?
if you do, I'm sure that you'll discover that there are male vocaloids as well, so your feminist-oriented argument stops working right there.

also, "objectify"? surely you're joking? seriously, take a look at some of the original music videos.

It's not objectifying women. It's objectifying anime women. The difference is one group is real, the other isn't. People may be stupid, but they're not stupid enough to combine fantasy with reality unless they're completely bat-**** insane.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Vocaloid stuff, but it's probably because I haven't explored very much. I heard a few songs, but wasn't really drawn in. However, I think Miku is very cute. :)

  • Anything by supercell, Saihate (I love all versions - the orginial, the livetune version and the -heavenly_mix- version), The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku, D.E.N.P.A, Escape, Scene, Romeo and Cinderella, and of course, Last Night, Good Night.

I actually of a lot of favourite Miku songs, but these are just a few of them. :P

  • Honestly, I hate Miku. Not because of her appearance or fan base, but I don't like her pitch for singing. I find it a tad annoying. But of course, thats just me.

However, Hold, Release; Rakshasa and Carcasses is an ok song because I like the beat. (Albeit it is creepy) And sad, a lot of the Miku songs I have heard, other than the happy poppish songs have been slightly disturbing. (Knowledge of the Late Night Madness, Kagome, Kagome, etc) I realize that the song's creator is into Horrorloid (I think thats what they call it) but with Miku's high pitch, it disturbs me even more.

I prefer all the other Vocaloids. (Although Rin has Fear Garden which still creeps me out.)

... I don't think any of that made sense.

  • I find a lot of Vocaloids songs to be kind of annoying. It's the singing pitch, I think, like Darachu mentioned. I wish I didn't find them annoying because I think the concept is fascinating but... what can you do? :(

But despite that I actually really love Miku's character design. I have since the first time I saw her and didn't even know what she was from. (I thought she was from Touhou for the first year or so after I saw her. xD) I don't listen to music made with the program, though I will hit up Youtube every so often and search for it out of morbid curiosity. Love Miku but I can't say I'm a fan of what she actually does, haha.

  • I can't really say I love any of Miku's songs, honestly. ^^' Teto, Rin and Len, and Luka all rock my world (b' ')b And Miki too, I guess, though I need to hear more songs by her first. But I do like the Miku fanart I've seen <3 /says this about practically everything, including fanart of RubyxSapphire from PokeSpecial, which is a ship I despise so much

At the same time, Black Rock Shooter interests me a little, but only because of the anime that's gonna be released. I also know there's a manga starring Miku (forgot if it was doujin or not, though it's on Manga Fox) that seemed like it'd be interesting, maybe.

  • Here's a composer's view on this:

I'm very much against Hatsune Miku and Vocaloids in general. To me, Vocaloid software can't actually create expressive music, since it fully sounds robotic. It's worse than auto-tuning a voice, in my mind; at least with the auto-tuner, you need an actual voice beforehand. Computer software has ways to go before it can even come close to matching real, human vocals; at least humans can display emotion. Vocaloids have their place if you're a shut-in who can't ask internet-people for vocals. That's the only time I feel that they're appropriate. If you can opt for real vocals, go for them, Vocaloids will bring down the quality of your track tremendously. Hell, even an auto-tuner for your own voice is more acceptable.

As far as songs I've listened to are concerned (as a former moderator for a rhythm game site which has over 70 files for Miku songs up), I've not liked a single one. Not a single one. Black Rock Shooter and Light Song came close just because they're 'catchy.' The Vocaloid voice pitches themselves sound too high-pitched and annoying and most songs I've heard sound absolutely choppy in terms of vocal execution.

tl;dr: I think Vocaloids shouldn't be used when you can opt for real vocals. Vocaloid music in general lacks the emotion of any other music (hell, even music you hear in clubs that is only proper to dance to has more emotion than this).

That's absurd. Expression isn't about the medium that's used, it's about putting one's feelings into a work. Suggesting that you can't express feelings because the medium is "robotic" is just silly.

The point of the Vocaloid software is to allow writers to publish their work without having to hire/find an actual vocalist, 'cause, y'know, not all of us have the connections to find one and stuff, y'know?

It's a matter of personal taste, really. And some songs sound better with that "robotic" tone (e.g. KOKORO).

Try getting a true emotion to come across with a Vocaloid and then you'll understand my statement. Please keep in mind that this is just one view and I'm not shutting down yours. I'm sorry if tremellos and vibrato sound like total crap on a Vocaloid in my mind. :/ It's one person's view, but I'm also offering this from a traditional compositional sense. Also, sorry if I'm using the term "robotic" to mean "devoid of feeling or emotion," in the generic sense of the term in this context. You can get pitches to match and have deep lyrics, but the manner in which they're executed affect the emotional involvement of the listener.

Besides, Vocaloids are definitely a last-ditch effort for vocals, as I can see it. The robotic vocals can only work on very specific stuff, but it can definitely lack the emotion a human emotion carries with it. Compare Miku versions of songs with their actual counterparts for examples.

It seems to me like this is the same as saying that you can't get across emotion using a synthesizer (or really, any instrument now that I think about it), which I find ridiculous. The voice itself may be just a tool, but there is a person behind it operating that tool, and that's where the emotion comes from. This is true for all instruments; they're tools, and by themselves are emotionless. A good musician will be able to bring out emotions through the instrument, whether it be a violin or a computer program.

  • I thought the topic was about your favorite Miku Hatsune song, not about what you think of her as a whole.

I liked some of her original songs. After the leekspin song came out, I stopped listening for a while.

I personally prefer Len, but I do like a lot of songs sung by Miku. My top three include: Melt, Mrs.pumpkin's comical dream and (of course) World is Mine.
