Have you reserved your Windows 10 today?

What is the purpose of reserving an upgrade of a piece of software? It's not like physical objects where there's some limited quantity, they can just keep on making copies.

Well reserving it now would mean that in the event of a pricing change or something like that, you'd still get it. At least I couldn't imagine any other use for it.

I'm seriously struggling to imagine what pricing change or something like it would be able to change their claim of "To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability." from here as well as all over the internet. backing away from that policy would be catastrophic for Microsoft's efforts to try to get everyone on board and would generate tons of bad press, so I simply don't believe that reserving it would have any effect whatsoever. With that being said, I have gone through the reserving process, if not for anything else than getting e-mail updates on how the process is coming along.

A commenter on Ars Technica had a great point on a possible reason for this icon in the systray
"[why they do it?] So that they can get developers on board by saying "x million people have reserved their upgrade to Windows 10, so get your apps ready!"

Also to give people time to address any compatibility issues (the application runs a compatibility check.)"

Haven't gotten it yet, and I should get it pretty soon. I'm pretty interested in it, actually.

I'll also check my desktop when I'm in Caifornia later today though. It was recently upgraded to 8.1.

Just reserved mine last night! Not sure if I actually want to upgrade as I am fine with 8 but ehh why not?

It's a free upgrade, so why not? Those that aren't eligible to reserve a copy of Windows 10 would have to pay around $130 dollars if they wish to update, or so I've heard, and I suppose I'm lucky that I'm not one of them, haha. From what I've seen so far, Windows 10 is looking pretty decent, and I'll be installing it as soon as it's released.

Nah, the reservation doesn't work that way. It's there so that you can pre-load Windows 10 like a video game.

Even if you never get the reservation offer, you should be able to upgrade for free so long as your OS is allowed (Windows 7 or 8.1). (One of the possible causes of the offer not appearing is that there is a severe driver issue that needs to be worked out.)

^I actually had to update my Windows on my laptop, making sure I got everything up to date. Once I'm clear from updates, I got the notification. Desktop already had the notificaton.
