HDD eating space on its own? (Solved!)

    Recently I find one thing that's troubling me recently. For some reason my harddisk in my laptop started to eating space on its own, and it seems to eating consistent memory, 200 MB by 200 MB at some point of time. I'm wondering if there's any way to fix this? Oh, and I'm using Windows 8.1 64-bit atm.

    UPDATE: It seems that I have found that System Volume Information folder have its files getting bigger at times, but here's the catch: I didn't activate System Restore even now, so I'm wondering why that folder gets bigger.

    sounds like you might have a fragmentation issue i would suggest getting something like defraggler and see how fragmented your disk is sice a severely fragmeented drive can report the incorrect free space as data is out of place
     
    Well, I have tried using Disk Cleanup at some point, and cleaning browser cache, but it seems to not fix the issue just yet. And I have checked Optimize Drives (built-in Windows app which has the defrag feature) and it says my HDD has less fragmentation issues (it just says 1% fragmented).

    UPDATE: I can confirm the root cause of it is in System Volume Information folder (I checked it via some disk space monitor software). It is kinda weird because I have System Restore disabled for quite long now. I'm wondering how to fix this?

    The thing is, Windows also stores its file indexing information there.

Under Protection Settings, you can choose whether System Restore is enabled and control how much disk space Windows uses for System Restore points.

    To reduce how much space it takes up, but there's not much you can do about it consuming space because it's a core system folder.
