As GYC (GoldenYellowCrystal) pointed out, Current Generation Pokemon Gaming is a nice place to check out.
Don't forget to check out the Adoption Center where someone can be found to help you get started.
Also, contact someone with a bold name if you get lost.

Hey there and welcome to PC! This was my first forum as well actually and let me tell you it's the best place on the internet for anything Pokemon! Six years is a pretty impressive time actually, I have been into Pokemon ever since the start of first gen and the start of the anime.
