Hey everyone. I just wanted to ask everyone's opinion on what Pokemon should I get next. At the moment all I have is a Grovyle and I know for certain that I won't be able to beat Flannery, so I need a second Pokemon.

I'm going to only use three Pokemon for the Elite 4 and the Battle Frontier, so I need this next Pokemon to be one that could hold it's own in competitive battles in-game.

So far, my second Pokemon I'm going to get is an Absol, so something that can go along with Absol and Sceptile would be great. Thanks guys. :)

Hm... Well, you're going to have to get a Surf Pokemon pretty soon anyways. Magikarp/Gyrados are always obtainable. xD The Old Rod is in Dewford.

Another alternative is evolving a Geodude... It has pretty good stats and provides you with strength against plenty of types.

Numels are around the area, so you should probably catch one of those. They know Magnitude, which is 50/50 coverage. You might want to level it up, alot.

But Gyarados is super vulnerable to electricity and can you use legendaries at the Frontier? Also, Camerupt and Sceptile would be weak against Glacia.

I guess I would suggest 4 pokémon, one to learn Surf and Dive and the other for your team. Perhaps a Salamence or a Walrien maybe.

Pick up a Taillow and a Ralts. Zip through the game and then worry about the Battle Frontier.

That's not how it works. Of course there will be Pokemon weak to another, but to construct a team you only put different Pokemon with different type advantages over another and stablize it into a team.

The following Pokemon are prohibited in entrance to the Battle Frontier:

    Mewtwo
    Mew
    Lugia
    Ho-oh
    Celebi
    Kyogre
    Groudon
    Rayquaza
    Jirachi
    Deoxys

As far as the Elite Four / Gym Leaders go, there are no limitations at all.

Ralts is a good candidate for in-game battling. It can set up a hell of a Calm Mind sweep. Altaria can do nearly the same thing with Dragon Dance. Swellow and Sceptile and Blaziken are good for strong direct damage, as is Gyarados.

Kayashi, why are you trying to introduce in-game sweeps? They're almost pointless, considering how horrible the in-game NPCs are anyway. I mean, yeah, it's pretty much gg with a CM or DD, but isn't it a gg without one, too? (lulz)

Anyway, don't really remember RSE all that well, but you're going to need something with an Ice-type move for Drake.

Just because the AI is pathetically weak, it doesn't mean you should use inferior strategy. In-game sweeps, as Kayashi pointed out, is a simple and very effective strategy. It is this strategy that allows you to take on the Weak 5 at lower levels, which means you can beat the game quicker.

As for a 3-Pokemon team, I would suggest against running the Battle Frontier with a team you run through the game with, mainly because your EV spreads will be complete crap. Some people don't care about EVs, but a lot of times that is the difference between a Silver and a Gold.

As for your team, I would suggest avoiding Absol and Torkoal. Neither are particularly effective, Absol because of its moveset and Torkoal because of its horrible typing. Well, to be honest, Sceptile isn't very effective either, unless you are going to use the SubSeed moveset, which I would highly suggest.

Personally, I would suggest adding Suicune or Vaporeon (if you can), and then a tough physical sweeper (think Metagross or Tyranitar) to round out your team.

The Elite 4 and the Battle Frontier are two different ball games. Mainly because in Ruby and sapphire you're forced to catch or defeat an uber, both of which work wonders for the elite 4 without any REAL training, just some TMs

The Battle Frontier matches your level though, and neither them nor you can abuse uber legendaries, so even if you solo'd the game with a Blaziken, it could be pure garbage for the battle frontier, how many challenges do you see around that say "you're finished in ruby/sapphire when you have the silver shield and in emerald when you have at least one silver medal"?

A Camerupt would be best for Flannery, great Attack and Sp. Def. It can learn Magnitude and Earthquake, If you train it a lot. I suggest a 4th pokemon, a dragon type like Flygon and Salamence, both has a lot of Stab moves.

Yeah, today I caught a Swablu and hopefully tonight I can get an Altaria by the time I'm up to Leader Norman.

I suggest not just 3, try for a graveler or camerupt to easily defeat flannery.

But consider getting more then just three, it'll help later on.

3 is plenty. Otherwise it'll take a looong time to level up your team to a high enough level.
