ok 1st go up to moltres and press f1 and shift if your playing on vba or save your game before battleing it. they get its health lowand throw about 15-20 ultra balls and if those dont work reset start the where you saved

Just, try to catch him right now, you don't want to go to the peak of Mt. Ember all over again. You should either use Blastoise's Bite to lower down Moltres' health to red, or Snorlax' Body Slam, to lower it's health and hoping to paralyze. Then throw your Ultra Balls at it. (Save your Master Ball for Raikou.)

I think you need a pokemon which has sleep powder move or hynosis (such as:Victreebel, Hypno). First: you use your pokemon to reduce Moltres' health nearly empty. Then you use Victreebel to make Moltres sleep. After that you can use 1-5 Ultra Ball to catch it ( 1 if you lucky). Good luck

Save before going in, then just keep trying 'til you get it, that's all the strategy where needs to be to capturing stationary legendaries.

Save, weaken it and attempt to afflict it with a status condition, then catch it. If that doesn't work, reset. Rinse and repeat until Moltres is yours.

Is it that imparative to catch it, though?
    It's honestly not that special...:S

Use Body Slam to weaken Moltres and hope for paralysis. If you get its health whittled down to the red without getting lucky, don't worry. Just fire Ultra Balls.

Moltres has a catch rate of 3. That is immensely low. (Pidgey has a Catch Rate of 255.) To illustrate how low that is, let me pull out some calculations for you. Say Moltres has 150 HP and you got it down to its last Hit Point, put it to sleep (even though your team isn't capable of doing that), and used an Ultra Ball.

The catch rate formula is the following (copied from Serebii.net):
    Catch = PokeballEffect (((( 4 * Max HP - 2 * HP ) * Catch Rate ) / Max HP ) + Status + 1 ) / 256

In this equation, the PokeballEffect is 2 (since you're using an Ultra Ball), HP is 1, Max HP is 150, and Status is 10 (SLP/FRZ=10, PSN/PRZ/BRN=5, none=0)

If my math is correct, this means you'll only have an 18% chance of catching the Moltres per ball under pretty much perfect conditions (the only way they could be better is if you used a Timer Ball after 40 turns; PokeballEffect would be 4 so double it).

Obviously you're not going to have perfect conditions. The odds are so low, you've just got to keep trying again and again until you get lucky.

You really need a pokemon with False Swipe to make catching the legendaries easier. I used Farfetched, then my Clefable to send it to sleep. Then keep lobbing Ultra Balls at it.

Do the same for all the legendaries. Keep the Masterball for your Raikou for when you've beaten the Elite 4.

I usually bring along Pokes with False Swipe, Sleep Powder, etc... to bring it down. First get it down to 1% health, then keep false swiping it. Once you're around turn 10 or so, sleep it, and then spam Timer Balls.

    Surprised nobody mentioned this...

Moltres is easier than the other two birds if you're lucky because of one move it has in FR/LG: Endure. With it, you can get it down to 1 HP without training a Pokemon specifically with False Swipe (because you currently don't have a False Swiper.)

Save before battling it. Lead with Snorlax. Body Slam it ONLY until you paralyze it. Switch to Blastoise. Use Water Pulse (it should be strong enough since Moltres will have taken Body Slam damage. If it does Endure, you'll leave it with 1 HP. If Moltres doesn't do Endure, it'll probably faint. Restart and try again in this case.

Once you are successful in having Moltres Endure a Water Pulse, it should be paralyzed with 1 HP. Now just throw Ultra Balls/Timer Balls at it, healing Blastoise when necessary.

You can also try it without paralyzing by leading with Blastoise and using Hydro Cannon from the start, but it'll be a bit tougher. But this way, you don't risk having Moltres use up its Endure PP while you try to paralyze the thing.

The point I was trying to make is that even under perfect conditions the odds of catching Moltres are still incredibly low. While getting it to Endure would be nice, reducing it to a single hit point wouldn't be worth not getting lucky and having to restart who-knows-how-many times, since the odds still wouldn't be that much higher.

While getting Moltres to Endure would save Poke Balls, I feel it's not worth it to risk killing it (Moltres didn't use Endure) for the sake of a percent or two. Use Body Slam, hopefully paralyze it, and get it in the red zone, then fire away.

Maybe you should train a wee bit more, then you should be able to catch it ^_^ Remember, effective moves, but not too strong.

I caught mine WITHOUT status in a great ball :)
    "Wild MOLTRES used ENDURE"
    "Wild MOLTRES braced itself"
    "Zapparn(my Zapdos) used Drill Peck"

[Bag -> Balls -> (no ultraballs left) Great Ball]
    "PINNE used Great Ball"
    ...
    "Gotcha! Wild MOLTRES was caught!"

I love hunting Legendaries, ESPECIALLY when you get REALLY irritated on those **** uncatchable Things....
And then the feeling of having captured ANOTHER Legend to your Collection!
    (i am collecting legendaries :-) )

    a tip I find out:
when throwing balls, I think their sucession rate decreases when you use the same type of ball consecutively, and the sucession rate of the other balls slightly increases, so use up all your pokeballs then all your great balls, and if you haven't got him by then, try ure ultra balls!
oh and btw, I think the sucess rate 'resets' when you use that ball
