You could use Media Player Classic to capture the frames you want, then use Jasc Animation Shop to gif them up

And where abouts on its options does it allow you to screencapture?

Mmm..Media Player Classic 6.4.8.2 can do Screencaps, in File -> Save BMP
This is not to be confused with Windows Media Player, however, which is a vastly inferior and bloated piece of software.

There is a great program that lets you convert an AVI to aniGIF. https://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gifcon.html That's it, you can download a trial version there.

Has no one heard of Print Screen? That'll take screens in basically everything if you configure the program right.
