i always thought an adopted pokemon was the one that you start with or an abandoned one you find or something

You can't adopt Pokemon in games!
Pokemon adoption is only a game that we members created.

Yes, they are right. You can't adopt Pokemon in the Ruby and Sapphire games. (Or any of them, for that matter.) I guess that since further discussion could continue about this, I'll leave it open, but it needs to be moved to the R/S Discussion forum.

Adopting Pokemon is simple! It is the same as trading! It won't show in your Trainer Card!

If you want to do that it will probably need some cheat codes. But it might be impossible. That's just a fun thing people do here on their trainer cards. Cheat codes as in like *looks at status in party*
