Have you tried using a more common 3D format, like OBJ or 3DS? From what I know, common formats are usable by most applications.
From the format you're using, I assume you're using SketchUp for your modelling, so you should try this: select all the models you want to export, download the 8-hour demo for the Pro version of SketchUp and use the exporters to convert it into a common format (I recommend OBJ for the export format). This should work you fine for those "immediate purposes".
I got Maya a few years ago with my college tuition money for my 3D animation class and was disapointed that I couldn't import 3DS files into it... Shame, since most people use 3DS when they export their models. Hard to find any good .ma or .mb files.
Thanks I forgot that Sketchup had a pro version, well I will need a bigger fix to this later on seeing that this will only work for the first 8 hours so I think I will wait on doing this until I am further along in the mapping for my game but thanks.
And if anyone else can help please do :)
Edit: Problem Solved
I went and downloaded 7-zip and the files unpacked in it :)
