Wow, a new Pokemon fan! That's a slight rarity around here, but there are still lots of fans who only got into Pokemon a generation or two ago. So you're starting with FireRed? Any plans to play all the other available games or will you jump to try the new ones afterwards? I definitely recommend the
Advance Generation Gaming board since all discussions related to Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen belong there. You can use the question/answer thread at the top of Advance Gen. Gaming to ask questions about the game too, so there's also that. :D You can also leave a message on my profile and we can chat away about the games; I've been playing since 1998 and would love to help out. Will make a friend in the process as well. By the way, what starter did you choose?!
Oh, and by the way, you should take a look at the
Battle Center if you need help with your team! Can get it rated and get suggestions over there for both your competitive and in-game teams.
Are you new to forums? If so you should remember to read the rules before posting around to get a general idea of how things work here, plus there are the individual section rules that should be read, too. It's actually pretty easy to settle in here - just don't be afraid to ask questions and such. Staff members like myself are always around to help out. There are plenty of other sections around the forum where you can make posts and discuss things with members, including off-topic discussions for when you want a break from talking about Pokemon.
