Yes, you will need two DS's to trade between HeartGold and Platinum. You have the option of using the Union Room for trades/battle where you can complete with wireless link up, or you can use the Wi-Fi room and do trades/battles with others who have Wi-Fi around the world.
Other than this, there is the Pal Park, but that is only for use of migration with R/S/E/FR/LG using the GBA Slot on a DS/DS Lite.

You COULD always trade with yourself on the one DS if you have WiFi by using the GTS... but that way does run the (small) risk someone will take your other Pokemon while you reconnect to the GTS with the other game, and then you'll have to be able to find you Pokemon as well (at least it's easier with HG/SS/Pt where more limits can be placed and all, such as place...). Also it'd take much longer - only one Pokemon at a 'time' when you could do a full party of 6 in a shorter time with two DS's.
Other than that roundabout method, you'll need two DS's to trade normally. Thread closed.
