Welcome to Hoenn Hard-Mode guys! This is based on the increasingly popular Nuzlocke challenge created by... well by Nuzlocke! His comics make for a brilliantly entertaining read which I suggest you check out! Throughout this RP you'll be faced with daunting challenges by virtue of 'the dice,' which will be introduced later in this post. I've opted to set this in the Hoenn region as that's where the first ever Nuzlocke from the comics took place. I thought that the Nuzlocke dynamic would add for a fun twist that may make this RP last longer than any of my others haha. Like most journey RP's this will be chapter based, meaning you will be given a set of guidelines to follow e.g. what you may (not) do in your next few posts.

"welcome to the world of pokémon."
This isn't the innocent world the games would have you believe. In the real world Pokémon die. Well, Pokémon can die. The Hoenn region was cursed long ago by a witch where Pokémon have a low percentage chance to die rather than faint. You are just highly unlucky. Other than this twist the games will be based on the standard R/S/E plot from the games, with variations as I see fit or ideas brainstormed from the OOC thread.

This RP is based in the magnificent Hoenn region where the land and sea is split more than any other region. It is based off the island, Kyushu, in Japan. It is located south of the Sinnoh region and was formed due to the great war of old between Groudon and Kyogre. Hoenn hosts 16 cities/towns and the prestigious Ever Grande City Pokémon League Championship! It is home to many interesting areas varying from the New Mauville to the Cave of Origin.

1) Follow all existing PC roleplaying rules.
2) Please, don't god-mod.
3) Let us know if you'll be inactive.
4) Make your reply as long as you possibly can.
5) I will decide if you capture the Pokémon or not, leave the ball rocking at the end of your comment.
6) You can decide whether the opponent does or does not faint when facing an NPC (which you can battle at any time).
7) When battling another player, please come to a conclusion of who is to win between yourselves. You can even let the match end in a draw. If you cannot come to a decision, then do not have the battle.
8) This roleplay will take place in chapters. You do not need to keep up with everyone else, or be in the right chapter. However it is advised as if you're not you may miss important events and interaction.
9) You may carry around six Pokémon at a time, like in the anime and games. All other Pokémon must be placed in the box.
10) I will most likely be lenient with requests so don't feel shy to ask about anything you need. If you would like to use a certain Pokémon let me know and I'll make it available in a suitable location.
11) Rated T for Teens. Your Pokémon may die but not in a gore-y(???) way please.

Every year Professor Birch gifts 5 youngsters the opportunity to become Pokémon trainers. Of course this doesn't come without a catch, he also gives you a Pokédex which he expects you to fill up a fair chunk at the very least. Of course he wants you to enjoy yourself and encourages you to take on the Pokémon League challenge. Birch himself is a big fan of battling as a sport and is known to occasionally visit Ever Grande City, where he socialises with the Elite Four. You will meet many people and Pokémon, along with enjoying an incredible journey with your partner Pokémon at your side. There will be great times, and tragedy to go along with it to polarise your quest. The question is, are you up to the test?

a) Basic Nuzlocke rules. The exception being that your Pokémon may faint freely, unless you get a dice roll (next rule) that means you have to kill off one of your team members.

b) The Dice Mechanic

The dice roll will be determined by Random Number Generator by myself. Depending on the number you receive you have to incorporate the scenario into your next chapter at some point. The numbers are explained below;
1 - If you receive number 1 you must kill off one team member of your choice (void if you only have one).
2 - If you receive number 2 you may catch as many Pokémon as you'd like in the next area (you may only catch one otherwise).
3 - If you receive number 3 you may catch the evolved form of the Pokémon you encounter in the next route.
4 - If you receive number 4 you may not catch a Pokémon in the next area.
5 - If you receive number 5 you must kill off a random team member (decided by the dice) (void if you only have one.)
6 - If you receive number 6 you must kill off two Pokémon of your choice (one if you have two, void if one).

c) This RP will be level based. The higher the quality of your post the more levels your Pokémon will gain. The same goes for the wild Pokémon you attempt to capture, very good posts will lead to wild Pokémon possibly having egg moves as well. Evolutions via. happiness etc. can occur at will as long as they aren't too reasonable e.g. as soon as you catch a 'mon. For stone evolutions let me know and I will try and incorporate them in as needs must.

d) To negate repetitiveness and "4 slot syndrome" Pokémon may learn up to 6 moves. This may be expanded to 8, but 6 is a good start.​

Connie Bennati ​

Age: Seventeen

Gender: Female

Appearance: Shorter than average at a mere 4' 9" with a more rounded, pear-shaped figure. Everything about Connie is round: her short-cut brown-ginger hair, her head and chin, her big, faded green eyes etc. Unfortunately Connie has little to no additional muscle or bulk; she's very frail and unfit, though her physical condition isn't anything "severe". She finds strenuous physical activity of any sorts exhausting. Her stamina and agility is non-existent. Her eyesight is also abnormal, but she fixes this with strong contacts. She has natural olive-toned skin, a light freckling upon her plump cheeks and upper arms and, of course, poor posture.

As for attire, Connie prefers longer, looser-fitting wear, such as sweatshirts and jeans. She'll tolerate longer shorts and sundresses but will draw the line at any skirt-related or anything "unnecessary". That means low-hanging jewelry. She finds its chattering very irritating. Her signature clothing item is a slightly baggy, dark olive sweatshirt whose dragging sleeves fall over her hands.

Personality: Connie enjoys practicality above all else and what she lacks in athleticism, she makes up for in intelligence. Connie is a powerful thinker, developer and organizer. She adores the act of dissecting poor arguments, tearing apart the lesser-educated and grinding them, figuratively, into the dust. She is a natural critic, a rule stickler and a humongous geek: she is a humongous super-hero fan and an avid comic book reader. And of course, Connie is the one geek who loathes the movies, which she has many retorts, that usually go on for quite some time, about why her opinion is justified.

Connie's habit of thinking far too deeply into situations can backfire, which it has done multiple times. Sometimes, comprehending a point for too long, going deeper and deeper until you hit a layer of bedrock, can render all other points previously made completely mute. And although Connie commonly acts both fiery and rigid, typically while upholding an argument, she does have key elements of anti-socialism. For example, conversing about subjects she may not be ardent about she finds fairly difficult, as well as preserving basic conversations in-general. Eye contact and posture she struggles with, as well as a lack of concern for the Pokemon she wishes to train.

History: Petalburg City; a city of serenity and tradition and the birthplace of young Connie. Misaki and Giampiero, a recently married couple on the very edge of the city, very overjoyed to successfully give birth to their only child, Connie. She had her father's last name only: Bennati. Misaki was a short yet lanky and pale-skinned florist who eventually moved onto becoming a botanist when Connie was five years of age. Her intelligence and rebellious spirit passed onto her daughter. Connie did not develop her cool-headed nature, however. Giampiero Bennati, her father, was a stone-cutter and ex-miner who ironically looked exactly like a chunk of rock. With his bulky, muscular figure, rocky complexion and graying beard, he appeared as a towering statue. Despite how rigid and upright he stood on average, his beady eyes always burned with indescribable passion for him and his family. A gentle giant he was, mostly towards Connie, and allowed her to get away with childish things Misaki was much stricter about.

The lessons taught by her parents followed Connie through her adolescence. Try new things and think outside of the box, her mother always told her. Stand up for what you believe and never forget those who support you, her father frequently said. Neither of them were Trainers; neither cared. Giampiero recalled a few hardy Machoke and Makuhita working vigorously among him in the mines back in the day. And of course there was the infamous time he'd chipped a Golem's shoulder blade off accidentally and almost lost his arm. Because of that, he claims Fighting types are his favorite and Rock types are the worst, or at least the most frightening and feral. Misaki had a pet Skitty who she adored as a child and recalls seeing a few beautiful Roselia on TV, so she says those two are her favorites and Bug types, the creepiest in her eyes, are the worst. Connie, when questioned about Pokemon and Training, at first was entirely indifferent. Some were surprised she had no strong opinions, especially about potential death, but truly Connie saw the majority of Pokemon as overly aggressive with a few domesticated ones sprinkled in-between.

If was when she was thirteen when Connie considered becoming a Trainer herself. She was exploring Petalburg with a friend from school. The two were chattering about something they'd read when a loud blast came from inside the gym. A trail of smoke began to seep from a crack between the automatic doors. It was a faint but still a sign of danger. Connie's friend ran off to call the emergency hot-line, or at least some adult help, while Connie herself boldly entered the smoldering gym. Inside, she arrived smack into a gym match. The visitor had ordered their Forrotress, out of desperation, to Explode upon Norman's Slaking. Yet they were still standing. Connie watched with interest as the trembling Johto-native returned their smoking Bug type and replaced them with a mean-eyed Feraligatr. It was able to strike the snoozing Slaking with a Brick Break: a super-effective move, the Trainer exclaimed with joy. Yet the Slaking was still standing. Norman ordered "Earthquake!" and the gym began to tremble. Connie grabbed onto a nearby wall, though the move did not affect her, only toppling the Feraligatr where it lay, unmoving. "A critical hit! Are you kidding!?" the Johto-native hollered.

The gym was eventually surveyed by some adults of Petalburg, but everything was ultimately okay. Not for the challenger, though; he'd lost tremendously, zero to four. Only the Linoone and Spinda he'd managed to KO. Slaking had completely walled his team with its sheer bulk. Connie was impressed by Norman's power and the strategy involved in Pokemon battling in-general. She'd seen it, at first, as a blood sport where the Pokemon Tackled each other until one keeled over. But now, she saw, not all Pokemon were the same. Feral they might be but, with a competent Trainer, battles could be very hectic and enjoyable. So, she began to look into it. Around her older teens, fifteen to seventeen, Connie became a huge computer and television nut. She hardly went outside anymore, unless it was to get a breath of fresh air, and almost never exercised. Her life became superheroes and Pokemon. She became obsessed with blogging: logging in everyday to criticize everything from the last comic book she'd read to the worst League match in history. Connie became what some would consider a competitive Pokemon nut: learning everything to do with typing, values, abilities, moves, etc. Her parents were not impressed with how much of a shut-in she was developing into, but her arguments and superiority with technology always beat them down. Still, they were looking for an outlet to get out into the world and away from her computer screen.

That time finally came when Trainer applications were finally being accepted. The Bennati parents were swift in applying their own daughter. She was a Pokemon enthusiast, through and through, after all. Her constant blather about everything related to Training and battling they found ironic, as they'd never, as a family, owned a Pokemon in their lifetime. Misaki was the only one with minimum Pokemon knowledge, and that only included how to feed them and clean up after them. And, of course, that advice was only limited to the Skitty line. Connie was even reluctant at first, finding it a "hassle" to travel from town to town. She was forced to adapt; her mother would not let her return home without at least one Gym Badge. She was capable and informed. She had a map, a bag and plenty of money to spend on supplies. Birch would provide the Pokemon and she'd get to choose it anyway, so there was nothing to complain about.

Pokémon: A Slakoth with no nickname. Connie sees no purpose in giving affectionate titles to her Pokemon, as she is well-aware the probability of them dying is low, yet possible. Slakoth is Male with the obvious ability, Truant. He knows Slack Off, his signature move, as well as Yawn, Scratch and Pursuit (the last being an egg move). He has the Bold nature which Connie is not very fond of but she supposes she can work around it.

RP Sample: An excerpt from a story I'm writing. If that doesn't suffice, I'll write a few paragraphs of Connie goofing about instead.

The studio was already a tight and clustered catastrophe and Oak's prompt spilling of papers did very little to help.

"Sa-MUEL!" Aurea Juniper resisted an urge to whack the aging man with the broom she carried. Though he stooped with a heaving breath to retrieve the fallen documents, Aurea continued to chide. "You just had to dump all your things where I was just sweeping? You're only adding to the mess. Keep a steady hand so I can finish cleaning!"

Her fellow professor was less than appreciative of Juniper's criticisms and met her with an equally patronizing glare. Paired with bushy eyebrows and engraved elderly wrinkles, he seemed seriously disgruntled as he muttered to himself: "What's more important, your compulsive disorder or my spine? Chivalry may not have died but respecting your elders certainly has." Though the stack of faded documents had been gathered, so complaining further would be futile.

Samuel Oak's mumblings however hadn't been lost on the ears of the attentive Professor Juniper. She seemed just about ready to use that broom for more than just cleaning as she opened her mouth, preparing a retort. Fortunately, they were not alone in the paper-strewn hideaway.

"Hey, you two! No bickering now, okay?" Even when he barked orders, everything about Birch seemed to smile and twinkle. He was the classic gentle giant, the obvious dad. Elm and him were occupied in the corner, attaching pictures and files and papers of all sorts to the walls, though the former said little a word.

Aurea seemed unfond of the activity. "And what are you two doing? An art project? Don't you think we should be focused on cleaning right now? This place is filthy!"

And she was correct. The hardwood floor was covered with a carpet of lint and dust. Used dishes were dumped in the kitchen sink and something underneath the couch gave a rather unpleasant odor. No one had bothered to check the bathroom. And then there was the issue of the outdated appliances and hideous floral wallpaper that adorned most of the small apartment.

"There's, what, five of us now and there'll be promptly six of us later on! Yet we have to share a single bathroom, kitchen, sitting area and teeny tiny work space! There aren't enough mattresses and only one couch!" Juniper continued to complain. "We can't sit around, sticking papers to the wall! We have lots of work to do, and I swear I'm not going to be the only one doing it!"

"Ah, but!" Birch had a counter. "These thumbtacks are adorable!" He held up a pin shaped like a crystalline Pichu in order to prove his point.

"Besides, we've got to put these papers somewhere." Professor Elm's voice was quiet but audible as he simply glanced in the female professor's direction before pinning a map of his home region, Johto.

Juniper glared at the duo, obviously not in the mood to be humored by Birch, nor be hardly acknowledged by his associate.

I've never attempted a Nuzlocke before, and this'll be my first foray into Hoenn, as well. Here's to trying something new!

Name: Lillith "Lily" Jordan

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Appearance:

Jordan is slim and athletic, of average height at 5' 3". She spends a lot of time outdoors, giving her a tanned complexion, while her preferred form of exercise focuses on lower body, resulting in wide hips and long, strong legs. Her hair is cut short, but messily, and she keeps the sides long to frame her face. Though she rarely makes eye contact, her eyes are icy blue. Her small nose and slightly crooked smile give her a cute, young look.

She dresses in clothes that are simple, tight, and plain, perfect for moving around in. She likes dark colors, wearing black jeans and gray boots, but enjoys a little color, such as a sleeveless blue tube top. She wears a grey scarf as a belt, as both an accent piece and in case it gets cold. On her right hand she wears a silver ring set with a blue sapphire.

Personality: Sweet, gentle, and sincere, Jordan enjoys helping others. She is quiet and a little shy, but works hard and is quick to jump in and lend her assistance. However, she tends to overreact, apologizes a lot, and lacks self-confidence. She has tried to become more assertive, but it's often rather hit or miss.

Though her people skills are a bit dodgy, she is very happy when out and about in the wilderness. She craves adventure and thrills, enjoys pushing herself to the limit, and is fascinated by combat. She enjoys learning more about the world, preferring a hands-on approach where she can go out and get directly involved. Her hobbies include running, singing (but not around others), and photography.

History: Born and raised in Fortree City, Jordan lived with her mother, a Pokemon Ranger, and her father, a writer. She always had a knack for working with Pokemon, and her mother wanted her to be a Ranger someday, but Jordan wanted to open a Pokemon Day Care or Health Clinic, so she could spend all day working with Pokemon. With her mother out on patrol much of the time, young Jordan spent most of her time helping her father with research, or out playing with stray Skitty.

When she was 14, the family moved to Littleroot Town after her father had written an article about Professor Birch. He got a new job as one of Birch's aides, and he even managed to get Jordan a job as a research assistant (a non-paying job, essentially an intern). She was excited for the opportunity to spend all day with Pokemon, just like she dreamed, even if it was basically just feeding and cleaning the Pokemon Birch had at his lab.

Even now, after living in Littleroot for four years, she still works as Birch's research assistant, and has gotten to know a lot about Pokemon. But the job still doesn't pay, and she still wants to open her Day Care/Spa for Pokemon. She gets the feeling Birch still considers her a kid, and is anxious for a chance to prove herself. If she could find a location for her business and some start-up money, that would be nice, too.

Name: Ariel Pierce
Age: 18
Gender: Male

Appearance: Are we looking at a member of a boy band, or a future pokémon trainer? Standing at 6' ft, Ariel is decently tall and has a wide frame, but only as of late. Puberty was long overdue by the time it knocked on Ariel's door, only some months ago on the day he turned eighteen. And what puberty had not graced him with on that day was something he deeply desired, a mature look. A pretty boy look and face he is, supposedly, cursed with. His eyes are bright, an emerald green sparkling to degrees which could put even the clearest of gems to shame. His lashes are, much to his dismay, long and luscious, results that the highest quality of fake lashes could not hope to achieve. His face is as bare and smooth as only the freshest of baby's bottoms.

Ariel's brunette hair is a shaggy, disheveled mess; his attempts to drown out the effect of his look. But unbeknownst to him, it serves to only add an additional layer to his boyish charms, fitting in with the look of a schoolboy too cool to do his hair in the morning. It runs down to the lowest portion of his nape and somewhat covers the ears. Some stray bangs float down slightly above his eyebrows.

Typically, Ariel wears a maroon v-neck t-shirt that accentuates his slim build and a pair of black jeans. Instead of wearing a belt, he opts for thin, black suspenders, but in truth he needs neither a belt or suspenders for practical purposes, for him it's more of a fashion statement. For footwear he wears a pair of black boots run with gray laces.

Personality: Betraying his appearance, Ariel is kind of an intolerable person. He is needlessly harsh and abrasive, not just to strangers, but also to acquaintances, in fact more so when it comes to them. The word respect does not register with him at all. All that being said, it's not as if Ariel is a malevolent person. He pays close attention to his surroundings, and when something he doesn't like is happening, he steps in without hesitation, even if recklessly. And despite his often harsh words, he cares more about the people around him than he would like to admit. In truth, Ariel finds it difficult to be honest with himself, and actively tries to maintain his unfriendly, exterior. If anyone catches wind of this and calls him out on it, he either gets flustered or ramps up the rudeness.

Ariel is quite prideful. It's both a negative and positive trait of his. At times his pride, coupled with his strong convictions can lead him down the wrong path, or blind him to the reality in front of him. But that same pride allows Ariel to never turn back on a promise or a declaration. When he says he'll do something, regardless of the detours and obstacles in his way, he strives to achieve it.

History: Ariel was born in Lilycove City, his parents the employees of Lilycove's art museum. As a child, Ariel look's left him frequently mistaken for as a girl. In fact during his primary school years, his pretty looks left him alienated and at times picked on by other peers of the same gender. In his own way of dealing with this, Ariel's personality came to develop, to the point where people seldom approached him, let alone made fun of him. He also turned to more physical, stereotypically male oriented activities, hoping it would distract from the features he loathed over, but those efforts never bore fruit.

While his parents tried to involve him into the world of fine art, Ariel never felt any inkling of interest for it, especially since he felt it would accentuate the prettiness that he'd been trying to shed. His parents were artists themselves, and although there works were well-received, it was only in art circles and never beyond that. While they encouraged him to find his artistic side, he wanted nothing to do with it. Seeing his parents strive to achieve recognition for their works, only for them to never break through the ceilings of their "little" world, left a sour taste in his mouth. Ariel wanted to do what his parents couldn't, make a name for himself and achieve recognition and acknowledgement, and although he'd never much thought about it, acceptance. It was a surprise to his parents when he told them he was going to become a pokémon trainer, but they were glad he had chosen a path for himself, even if it were one so potentially filled with sorrow. Ariel believed if he could rise past the competition, then surely he'd find all that'd he been looking for.

Age: 18
Appearance: Teal hair and matching teal eyes, short hair with a small french braid on the side. Possesses a wiry figure, not too thin/skinny. Her height is at 5'7ft. Almond shaped eyes, sharp and intense with an impish look. Despite her looks and figure, she is athletic; good at running and acrobatics. Haley also uses makeup, generally the eyes, blushes and lip gloss, she also has perfect finger nails.

She wears an lolita style called "kodona". Short capri-style pants, high-waisted along suspenders, colored brown. A color peach ruffle victorian blouse with an open collar and a red brown ribbon tie. Brown thigh-highed socks and light red brown knee-high boots. As for other accessories, she wears a top hat to complete the look, plus an simple choker with the number 7.​

People naturally assume that she was the type to cause havoc everywhere she goes, typically thanks to her cheshire-like smile and mischief twinkling eyes. They were wrong (half-ish, that is). Haley is just a carefree person, nothing lets her down; always seen laughing and smiling. A flippant person- to the point of being rude. And blunt. Has no care of the fact that she can hurt someone else's feelings or simply does not notice nor gives a thought about it.

The type of person to make more enemies due to her attitude but one cannot help admire that she won't let herself be fazed and keep on going. She's determined to reach her goals whatever it may be. Pokemon Death doesn't bother her, oh she'll pay respect but she would not let the thought of it linger, they die whether by luck or not- everyone dies. (That does not mean she wants to die.) Even if someone asks, she'd all be nonchalant about it- depending on the person, they may be offended that she would not be affected by that.

It is only simply because Haley would not let herself get attached, no matter how friendly or how much she likes them: she will not get herself attached. Being attached means getting hurt than any physical injury, it is why she does not get close. (Appearances can betray what someone feels inside.) Haley is rather good at keeping her emotions control- if she has some other than being too blunt. She might only feel passing sadness but that's it.

(Whether or not she on it is debatable. Or if she really feels the aftermath of the death of her possible pokemon.)

Haley is also someone who teases, even if she goes to far that someone snaps at her. She might or might not apologize. A girl who doesn't get bothered of other people's opinion of her, dislike her or no; she practically doesn't give a d*mn. Although she might show some respect (with the exception of elders. they're old, they deserve respect. except the rude ones) otherwise, she's a casual person.

Maybe she resembles a cheshire cat in terms of personalities. (And looks with those eyes and smiles of hers.) She does get serious when it comes to pokemon battles and she takes good care of the Pokemon in her hands. She can be nice, she can be generous, she can be thoughtful of others; possible that she just can't bring herself to. (Laziness, perhaps? Too much work, maybe?)

Before she was born, her Daddy was a broken man. He mourned for the friends that he lost, companions that stayed long or short and then they were gone. He lost a lot of his Pokemon friends yet he kept going, because being a Pokemon Trainer is in his blood, he was a strong man. However, the lost kept piling up and up, his heart was too open and so he had gotten hurt over and over again until one day, it took a toll. He became depressed until he met Mommy. She was a part of a circus visiting town and they fell in love at first sight. Thanks to her, Daddy's heart healed. like all those cliche things blah blah

They settled down on Verdanturf Town, 2 years later: Haley Summers was born. In all of her child years, she personally thought the place was kind of boring - she loves her home of course but still - and so she spiced it up, sometimes she'd get in trouble and be scolded about it. Marina had thought of teaching her daughter the skills that she used to have from her old job before she settled down, it would do no good not to teach her what she loved to do. It did keep Haley occupied.

And then came her Daddy's worst nightmare: Haley wanted to become a Pokemon Trainer. When he asked why, she told him that she wanted to travel around the world and because she watched the battles that TV spouted (with the exception of the Pokemon dying, we wouldn't want to scar the young who watches, right?), she wanted to become one. (Of personal reasons that were not important.) The young girl trailed off when she saw her Daddy crumble before her very eyes.

She never, ever wanted that to happen again.

Haley knew that Pokemon died not just from natural causes, coincidentally, at late night where she should be asleep; the teal-haired little girl passed her parents bedroom quietly, she stopped. The girl could hear their voices murmur, wide awake. Her Daddy's voice was so heartbreaking, so unlike his normal behavior where he would make her smile everyday made her think of the broken expression when she had said she wanted to become a Pokemon Trainer. There were tears and all the things that drama provides.

(It was only because her Daddy's heart was too open, he was the person who loved and loved, having his Pokemon die because of a dice had pierced his heart so many times- he could only despair, he loved too much and look at what it got him.

She had brought herself not to care. She did not want to be like Daddy. She would not become broken. She was but a child, the mantra of do not become attached it'll only make you be like Daddy stuck through her skin and that is how the present Haley came to be. (It stuck even as her Daddy smiled at her after that, his hurt sensitive heart carefully covered. It stuck even as he accepted what she wanted to, (it's in her blood like him) support her dreams as he tells her to be careful.

Be strong.

Yeah I'm anticipating it, hopefully it's a long lasting one... My furthest journey RP as GM was the first gym, aha. Oh wow that'll be a sight! I was told once we picked up a fourth, confirmed member the IC would follow suit, so shouldn't be too long!
