How come Ash doesnt catch more Pokemon?

Remember during the first few episodes? Where Ash was all "I'm going to be the greatest Pokemon master ever!" and how he was going to catch all 150 Pokemon? Well its been like 14 years and hes only caught less than 30 different kinds of Pokemon and a few of them were given to him. When he usually sees a wild Pokemon he observes it, maybe checks his pokedex, and thats it. He leaves it alone and often helps wild pokemon get back to another part of the territory. Or releases them.

What happened to that desire to catch all the Pokemon? What happened to that desire to be the very best, that no one ever was?

Lets try to think outside of the, "too many pokemon to focus on in a 23 min show" box.

I understand what you mean, sometimes I get so pissed off when he defeats a random poweful wild pokémon and never bothers or thinks of catching it, I remember his pikachu knocked out a Swampert and ash just ignored any possability of catching it.

Something quite interesting, in Best wishes Ash already has 5 pokemon - his 5th was caught in the 7th episode, so that is kinda quick. But honestly, it's like they make it he only needs to catch about 6 pokémon in every region he goes to.

    There aren't 150 Pokemon anymore.
We can't really expect Ash to catch all 600+ Pokemon present till date. It would be rather impracticle. And the other protagonists also need some unique Pokemon as well which Ash shouldn't have.

I think that since Pokemon's English motto is "Gotta Catch 'em All!", the writers just wanted to bring this into the Anime as well. They didn't literally mean that Ash would catch every single Pokemon.

And how would Ash become the best if he tries to catch all the Pokemon? He needs to focus on training a limited number of Pokemon. xD

I heard on one of Chuggaaconroy's videos (I think it was in his Crystal Walkthrough), that they stopped using the phrase "Gotta Catch 'em All!" because of the fact that Ash wasn't aiming to catch them all, but to be the Pokemon Master.

Why would the English phrase have any impact on what the writers do in the animé?

It was most likely since the amount of Pokémon increased. If it were for the above reason then they would've never used that phrase in the first place.

Anyway, it's better that they don't catch too many Pokémon and limit him to only six so they all get spotlight. Considering that he now has many different types of Pokémon, he could just switch out using them when he needs to instead of catching even more Pokémon.

The "Gotta Catch 'em All" slogan is basically a misconception on 4Kid's doing as the game's aim was basically that, catching them all. 4Kids' didn't know what direction the anime was going or indeed how many pokemon there would be in future generations so the slogan was dropped. The anime is different from the games and no can can realistically catch them all especially certain legendaries.

^ What do you mean by "misconception"? It was proper advertising on the part of 4Kids for the games where it was still feasible to catch every Pokémon.

Kanto = Pikachu, Butterfree, Pidegot, Charizard, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Kingler, Muk, Primeape, Tauros x30 "Haunter". 12 Poke he caught.

Orange Islands/Johto = Lapras, Snorlax, Heracross, Bayleef, Quilava, Totodile, Noctowl, Donphan, "Larvitar". 9 Poke he caught.

Hoenn = Swellow, Sceptile, Corphosh, Torkoal, Aipom, Glalie
    6 Poke he caught.

Sinnoh = Strapator, Torterra, Infernape, Buizel, Gliscor, Gible.
    6 Poke he caught

Unova = Mamepato, Oshawott, Tepig, Snivy, Egg

I say he gets more than six in this region.

He got Beedrill in Johto. You're mixing it up with the Raticate that he traded back. Also, Lapras and Snorlax were obtained in the Orange Islands and not Johto. You're also forgetting Glalie

I guess you are excluding the lines like Charmander > Charmeleon > Charizard and so on. Anyways if they featured more pokemon it wouldn't give much room for development. Unless they add more episodes too make room for more pokemon.

They dropped the "Gotta Catch 'em All" slogan a long time ago. I think that it's simply too much that Ash would catch every Pokemon in existence.

Ash isn't even fair to his current group of Pokemon. If he isn't go to use them he might as well release them for their own good. That way they can live free lives and possibly mate. Most of his Pokemon joined him so they could travel with him and get stronger, not so they could just sit around at Oak's lab.

it would be impractible if he caught all 600+. All of his pokemon are special to him in one way ar another.

I kind of wish he would catch more pokemon at times... but then I also enjoy seeing his old crew come out and dominate.

I dunno, it'd be nice if he did have more pokemon so in pokemon leagues or gym battles, he can use more pokemon... But I like what they are doing so far anyways... I thought they handled the Sinnoh League really well.

So it's an interesting question that is hard to answer

The only problem that I see with Ash catching many Pokémon in a region is that some of them might get the same treatment that Kingler and be used only on rare occasions.

Because catching 600 pokemon is NOT the real objective of pokemon, its kicking every1's butts w/ ur pokemon...
Not true, Pokemon is meant to be played however the player wishes. It's up to them whether their main goal is to collect, train, battle, etc. It's a role-playing game where you don't become the protagonist, the protagonist becomes you.
