In the UK they used to show it right before Snow Way Out on Sky 1 weather it was Christmas or not. I never found it offensive. I only found that this Christmas episode was banned on Bulbapedia. The only thing I used to wonder about those episodes was why Ash's charizard went back to a charmander.

The biggest reason was because Jynx was originally black instead of the purple we see today. Some lady accused Jynx of being a racial stereotype to black people and it was removed from rotation in the US but can be seen else where like you can see it in the UK because you guys might not have the same restrictions as we do in the US.

That also might be why you see Charizard as Charmander because it might be out of order.

The episode was originally supposed to premier in Japan after the famous Porygon episode. But since the Porygon episode caused so many issues, the Pokemon anime was taken off television for four months (starting in December 1997). But when Pokemon came back, it went right to Pikachu's Goodbye, skipping over the Jynx episode.

Since the Jynx episode had a Christmas theme, it wasn't released in Japan until October 1998, completely out-of-order. So that's why Charizard was a Charmander again: the episode was originally created a year before any audiences saw it.
