    Hey everyone, I recently got an interest in ROM hacking and would like to know how to get started. I tried looking around but no luck.

    This is a pretty good starting place to start:

    There's also a lot of tutorials floating around YouTube.
    You will probably want to start out hacking FireRed or Emerald as those have the most tools and the most people working with them as a base. It's possible to hack the DS titles too, but it's not an ideal starting point for a beginner.

    I want to know what I need to start rom hacking, that post only says these can help.

    Jacrad gave you something more useful than what you asked for. If you want the technical answer, you need a ROM, a way to read it, and a way to write to it. But the link you were given is a lot more helpful, so you should start there.

    I have read it. I want to play rom hacks, not make rom hacks. Does that clear things up?

    Lunar IPS, the Hack's IPS file, the appropriate base ROM, and an emulator.
    You can get links to all of those here, except for the ROM base.

    I think there are some hacks that are put online already patched but links to them aren't allowed here.

    Yeah, that's better. ROM hacking means doing the actual making of the hack. You just want to play them. Grab an emulator (Google Visualboy Advance if you're on PC; MyBoy is good for mobile), grab Lunar IPS (to patch your .ips files that you download from threads to your ROM), and the approriate ROM from somewhere else that we're not allowed to talk about on this forum but Google will lead you to. Download the .ips file. Download the correct ROM. Open Lunar IPS. Apply patch/.ips file to ROM. Open VBA. Open newly patched ROM. Play.

    Also, give some constructive criticism to the hackers whose hacks you have played. It's the least you could do for their effort, and will help them out a ton when it comes to improving.

    Typically you're going to find it in the thread for the hack you want to play. Unless they haven't released it yet of course.

    Do you have a specific hack in mind?
     
    I downloaded a rom hack, but I don't know what to do now. I have the emulator and lunar IPS. In the .rar file it includes NUPS.exe, pokemon_gaia_v2.5.ups, readme.txt(i know what that is), and tsukuyomi.exe.
