How do you determine value?

With game prices rising to disgustingly and unjustifiably high levels, how do you personally determine what the value of a game is, and what you're prepared to spend your money on? Do you look at technical performance, gameplay, the reputation of the developer, the hours you're likely to spend relative to the asking price, or some combination of these things? Do you have exceptions to the rule? With the benefit of hindsight, have you ever spend more money on a game than you feel that you should have?

Value to me is the ammount of enjoyment I have in a game, which can differ per game. You can have a ton of value in a sandbox game due to the ammount of hours you can put into it before falling into repetition, but you cannot have that in a linear game, in those cases it comes more down to the story it tells or the gameplay mechanics it provides.

Not going to lie I have been pretty stingy on buying new games lately, but that is more to having less time to venture into new games and the games I do play still have hours of gameplay to offer for me.
