How do you use the favorite button?

I drop it on anything that i do not want to send away, it is as easy as that. For each species i want to keep the strongest IV ones (the two best if two or more are top-tier 80%+) and also the strongest CP one.

The only thing that the star really does, if you use it for all species, is to prevent you from accidently sending away a pokemon that is the best one you have from a certain species. I only remove the star if the pokemon that has the star got outclassed by a better one from the same candy species.

It is only client-side, this feature does not communicate with the server at all, and all it does is to prevent you from sending away pokemon with a star, unless you remove the star. So if you want to think twice about sending a certain pokemon away, give it a star, it prevents hasty mistakes. This is not rocket science, and it is not brain surgery.

When the game was initially released, I used the favourite button for, well, my favourite Pokemon. But over time I realised I had loads of favourites and so I don't really use it anymore xD
 
I've been using it for making it easier for when I do big evolution sprees, or Pokémon that I just can't afford to transfer away by mistake (basically my high % Pokémon, especially rare ones).
 
First of all, I used favorite buttons for my pokemons with high CP. After I learned IVs, I changed it to high IVs.
 
I still use favorite for highest CP. If my pokeman is "a wonder" (mystic) I put an asterisk after the name.
