How good is your internal compass?

I have a challenge for you.* Close your eyes and walk to your kitchen. Get a glass(or maybe plastic) of water, and come back to your room. Without opening your eyes. (You can skip the water part if you're worried about spilling it. Also, make sure there's nothing that could cause you to fall and hurt yourself in advance.)

All done? Good! So, how did you do? Were you able to walk in a straight line, or did you run into everything in your path? I tried it myself, and when I got to the living room, and couldn't touch the walls anymore, I ended up curving sharply to the left, and eventually ran into the fireplace, when I was trying to find the chair on the other side of the room to regain my bearings. lol

*This really only works if you're far away from your kitchen like I am. Try and figure out some other challenge for yourself, if you're not. Also, now you know what it's like to be blind, lol.

My internal compass if horrible. I tried to walk to the kitchen, and ended up somewhere in Canada... No really!

    Where you ask?

In my house because I live there. :V

But the experiment went not badly, I got it pretty quickly, I never bumped into anything, but the second I wasn't touching a wall, I was completely lost until I felt something I was familiar with. If I had to walk in a straight line blindfolded, I would veer off at least to a factor of 2 compared to other people.

Not going to try your exact suggestion because my bedroom is downstairs and my kitchen upstairs and I don't want to break my neck. Actually, I'm not going to try any walking around in the dark because there's a lot of stuff at shin-height and I don't fancy a shiny new bruise.

Let's just say that I can navigate fine at night without the lights on, but I wouldn't push my luck and close my eyes if I couldn't keep my hand on something nearby.

I've tried this before in my spare time a while back and I was decent at it. I don't want to do it now though cause there's loads of antique furniture and it would not fare well for me if I ended up breaking any of it. It's fine if I break my own body but NOT THE ANTIQUES! THEY ARE PRICELESS! SCREW MY ARM OR WHATEVER, THAT CAN JUST GET FIXED AT THE HOSPITAL. BUT NOT THE PRICELESS ANTIQUE FURNITURE! ALL VALUE IS LOST ONCE THEY BREAK!

Haha, well if you guys don't want to do it inside... how about this: Go outside to the sidewalk, close your eyes, and walk 10 squares. Then count how many squares you actually walked. It's probably not going to be 10. (Also, you may not even be on the sidewalk anymore by the end of it. lol)

Just in my own house? Yeah I get around fine. Often times if I wake up in the middle of the night and I have to go the bathroom or get a drink I don't bother turning on the lights. Hurts too much anyways and I know my house very well. I also have this weird habit of closing my eyes when I walk around my house in the dark to begin with. Mainly because when it's really dark sometimes certain things appear when they really aren't and just makes getting around harder.

I don't think I can do your challenge because I live in the basement of my house and I have to go upstairs just to get anything. Besides, I think I broke my internal compass years ago.

However, I think I can do that, but I'm not in the mood to go up to my old room and try it.

I know the layout of my house really well, and for short distances I can do that, but then Equilibrium kicks in and Turn-it takes a tumble. :D:D:D

Huh, I think my internal compass is pretty average. I can find my way through my house easily and only bump once or twice, I guess. That too because of the recent changes in my room, so yeah.

My internal compass is pretty good because I have pretty good spatial skills, and my somewhat photographic memory allows me to essentially see the way to my kitchen in my mind's eye pretty easily, haha.

Overall, my internal compass is terrible. I have zero navigational skills even with my eyes open, half the time I need to have a friend in the car with me to direct me somewhere I've been at least 5 times before lmao. I am not Boy Scout material.

As for this test though, I did quite well! My living room is right next to my kitchen so I felt like it would be cheating to just walk in there with my eyes closed, so I went downstairs and spun around twice on the spot, then started back. I ran into two walls before I reached the stairs, but after that I did absolutely fine. I only filled my cup half way to the top because I was scared I'd spill it everywhere, but then I managed to feel my way back to my laptop and sat down and opened my eyes! Boom.

I know the basic layout of my house, but we move stuff like furniture all the time so I'm afraid of actually trying the experiment for fear of breaking something. Or because of my clumsiness.

Around town, like when I'm in a car, I like to say I'm pretty good at getting myself aroudn without using aids like maps or GPS systems. But I still wouldn't try that with my eyes closed, lol

Like Scarfy, my bedroom and the kitchen are on different floors so I'm not going to actually do the test. However, because of the nature of my house, it's very easy to get from one area to the other with one's eyes shut. You just wouldn't do it because of the death-trap that is the stairs connecting the kitchen/bathroom to the rest of the house. But in terms of spatial awareness, I think I'm pretty good at it. I just don't have a death wish so am not going to start walking around blindfolded or anything!

I tried it. And when I opened my eyes, my whole house was a mess. Thank you for ruining my house. I heard a glass shatter, but I just have to see if my internal compass was great or not. Luckily, I didn't step on the glass shards. But unfortunately, I broke the antique vase that my mom got from my grandma! Dang, I don't know, I regret doing it.

Overall, you wrecked my house -- or my internal compass did, and got me a grounded for a year.

    It is very good.
I have often walked around my house in the pitch dark and been able to navigate myself fine without walking into a door!

I won't actually do this because I have two sisters who leave stuff all over the place and a dog that likes to get under my feet so I'd probably break myself/something.
But from the many times I've walked around the house in pitch black darkness at four in the morning I've done it without any problems. Maybe tripping over the odd shoe or stepping on the odd teddy bear on the landing but apart from that I got a perfect score. :3

I could navigate my house with my eyes closed.

Anything else though, no. Even driving.. north, east, south, west, street names... I'm very GPS and "landmark" dependent.
