How is the TCG going?

    Hi there. I used to play with pokemon cards starting from back in the day when they didn't have all of the pokemon released and the cards were $8 a pack. Thankfully they got cheaper, haha. Anyway, I collected them for years and probably have tens of thousands of cards from every set from base set up until the fourth neo release (neo destiny?). Man, I must have made like 50 decks out of all those cards or at least I came close. My first favorite had Alakazam and Gengar in it with the 4 Mewtwos back when there were only 4 Mewtwos. Then I made one for all of the gym leaders though they kinda sucked. I had one with Shiny Gyrados and two Charizards (base set and base set 2) just to show off lol. Then they had Metal and Dark so I had this deck with 3 Steelix in it that was pretty good. But I think my favorite was my Dark deck because it had my 3 favorite pokemon in it, Typhlosion (Regular and Dark), Tyranitar, and Sneasel, all in one deck.

    Man, look at me reminisce. I probably look like an idiot, but that game was fun. I almost always ended up playing against my own decks though so I never really got to tell if they were any good. Anyway, I'm just wondering if any of the old cards are still used in the recent metagame. I looked at some of the newer cards and they look like they don't fit stylistically at all with the ones I have. I think I remember from back then that Sneasel got banned because he was too good (my favorite pokemon lol) so maybe he's still usable even if some of the other cards got obsolete.

    Anyway, it's cool that the TCG kinda survived. Tell me what's up.
     
    I just used to collect the cards, I never knew how to play and to this day I still don't know how to play. I loved to get the foil cards and watch them shine. Maybe if I actually knew people to play against I'd learn to play
     
    In tournaments, nothing older than the Diamond and Pearl: Majestic Dawn set is play-legal, unless it was reprinted in a set that was printed after Majestic Dawn or printed in Majestic Dawn itself, but you would need the new printing of the card for reference because the wording probably changed some between the old and new printing.

    That sucks. So absolutely none of my cards are legal. Is there a reason for that or is it just because there are so many cards at this point that they contradict each other? I know at some point they must have replaced char counters with the burn effect, so I guess they've made some changes to how the game was played.

    There are competitive reasons for it. The metagame would get pretty stale if they didn't rotate sets out of their tournament-legal sets every year. It's also to keep the playing field level so that new players can easily jump in and do pretty well without needing some ultra-rare, out-of-print-for-five-years card to do so (basically, competitive balance, in addition to what already exists due to the majority of cards having a weakness to some other card type). A third reason is to keep the money flowing so that they can continue to support the Organized Play events.

    What is your basis for this conclusion? Don't just say something without giving a reason for it.
     
    Basically they limit it to Magestic Dawn cause the Roster of cards will be 2 large but hopefully they'll reprint Gym Hero's and Skyridge.

    Reprinting those two sets will probably not happen. Individual cards from those sets, maybe, but I highly doubt those two sets that use outdated game mechanics will be printed in their entireties.
     
    Yea, you can only use cards from Majestic Dawn to the most recent release!
     
    The TCG is still going strong, yearly tournaments include prereleases, battle roads, city championships, regional championships, national championships, and world championships. The last city's I went to had 80 people attending, and there were about 200 in nationals last year. It's true that your old cards aren't playable anymore, but it would make for a really stale format if we were all playing with the same cards from when we were kids.

    Nintendo would probably claim them to be fakes and ban you for life from events. :x

    This is very true in my area, though, aside from nationals (since I live in the US), the tournaments have much smaller attendance figures because there are more tournaments in my area, and a slightly smaller pool of players.

    And the format would be very stale if the older cards were never rotated out.

    WHAT!? O.O That's no fair. Well, I know not to go in the future any time soon. Isn't there a way to distinguish the fake cards from real cards?

    Well, if they haven't been released yet, no. That's why I said Nintendo would claim them to be fakes, since they wouldn't have started printing them yet.
     
    Going to the future could ruin the flow of the cards and will be classified as fakes by Nintendo then they'll have to re-design and most likely think of a new card list so no future travelling or going back to the past cause that'll ruin Pokemon cards.

    Btw: Anyone that lives in Australia Melb or Syd there's shops called Good Games that run TCG/Board Game Leagues so there are probaly Pokemon leauges in those shops aswell.
     
    Ok. Well I could get into a whole little debate here about the time travel thing. But this is a thread about what cards are legal, in tournaments, now. I wish my school schedule wasn't so harsh, that way I could go to my league and practice my decks I made and improve them for this years tournies.
