How to enlarge ROMs

Before expanding my rom, there is one thing I'd like to understand first. For example: A pointer to 0xAABBCC, would be CC BB AA 08. To point to any offset higher than 0xFFFFFF, the 08 commad would have to change. Maybe to something like 09? Can anyone give me some light on this?
 
This surely is an old post and sorry for replying in this (its not closed so i guess i can post).
The attachment's gone so where else can i find it?
