Human trafficking

    This disgusting and inhumane criminal activity still goes on today, and off the radar of the general public. It seems like a lot of people don't know or don't care about these kinds of crimes. I read a book about this kind of stuff in Russia a while ago, where someone sent their daughter into southern Russia from another country because they were offered a job at a store, luring the daughter into a trap and basically turning her into a slave that lived in the basement of their store, the police too corrupt to do anything about it over there. This kind of crime happens a lot and no one knows.

    It's everywhere, in probably every country. In America itself, not many seem to be aware of the problem, the general public at least, doesn't seem to be that concerned/aware.
     
    It's pretty scary to think about. I think it's like a lot of darker and scarier criminal problems, most people don't think about it very much because it is not highlighted in the media as much as things which are more visually dramatic or politically inflammatory between the left/right. It's sad but I feel like most causes that people care about these days are just things they see on TV or Facebook. Maybe that's off-topic, though.

    I know there are several groups and organisations founded specifically to fight this problem itself, but I assume they don't get a whole lot of public awareness too. Or at least not as much as I personally would prefer.

    It is a scary thing to consider though, I mean many people now probably think it's safe to travel if you're not going somewhere like the Middle East, but really from what I've read things like this are a problem pretty much everywhere.
     
    I really think there should be more public awareness on this. But even it was more known to the public, what would they do?

    Also it actually does seem not well known by the public because I was on reddit the other day on a post about sex traffickers being arrested and people actually were complaining and saying cops shouldn't arrest prostitutes.
     
    Oh absolutely.

    I've worked in hotels for a number of years, and obviously human trafficking is something that is prevalent in the greater tourism industry as a whole. A lot of bigger hotel corporations have human trafficking training which is nice to see, but the problem is a lot bigger than we expect. You can expect that any major festival or sporting event (The superbowl being a very big one, for example) has people being trafficked and that there's a black market operating at the same time.

    Terrible shame. I keep meaning to read more on it too considering it affects me in my field.
     
    One of the major enablers of human trafficking are giant open defenseless borders. Brazil (My country) has the Amazon, and it is a giant open field used for various types of criminal activity, such as human trafficking, drug trafficking and one of the most recent ones, illegal border transpassing (Venezuelans escaping from their country). Unfortunately there is not much we can do to stop it, the jungle is too thick to any kind of army operation to be effective. Cutting down the trees would create a massive backlash One of the largest hotspots of this act is the Guyanas.
    Both Guyana, French Guyana and Suriname are big hotspots because it is really easy to send people to europe and other places.
    Last year there wasn't there some news about a place in the US that was doing it? Some kind of hotel or something?
     
    I get a lot more disturbed at trafficking when you see the victims in regular life or in places you wouldn't suspect.

    As I'm sure anyone would know, most asian massage parlors are more hidden brothels if anything; they're almost always guaranteed to be shady or sexual in nature, but in fact most of the women who work there (ie, are forced to do sexual favors all day) are in fact trafficking victims brought over.

    And they're forced into that as their only opportunity. THAT is almost the equivalent of slavery these days. And it is at least sex slavery.

    I feel like that kind bothers me most. To not only traffic people, but to just using them so callously for gain.
     
    It's an unfortunate situation but I don't know how much anyone can really do about it. It tends to happen in places with corrupt law enforcement. I think the best anyone can do is apply political and economic pressure to those states to hopefully nudge them toward reforming their law enforcement.
     
    One tip would be to be extra careful about "employment" opportunities. Unfortunately, human trafficking happens everywhere, it is in Canada, it is in the US. Young girls and women are kidnapped here and sent over seas, or maybe they work here.
    There have been some signs that pop up like "make x amount a week from home" and just a number, do not trust this, it's likely a trap.

    I wouldn't say those examples are exactly kidnapping traps, but more so financial ones, but yeah, dubious all the same.

    Ummmm... not that I necessarily disagree with your sentiments, but... do you have citations for this? This is a pretty big claim to make, especially to say that "anyone would know."

    Why do I have to do that for you?

    It's literally as simple as googling "Asian massage". First page of search results alone will tell you everything you need.

    1) It's your point, so bolstering it up with something to back it up is ideal for a debate section

    2) Googling it or do your research isn't a counter to someone asking for citation

    3) Anyone can google something, doesn't mean what they find is true. If you're going to claim something is true, then find something that bolsters it (I'm not saying you aren't true by this, just saying if you are going to make a claim, back it up with something)

    I'm not your dad to tell you how the world works. If you don't know this then all I can really say is... Naive.
    You need to have your own drive to find things out yourself too.

    What Vragon said, but also, it?d be too easy to stumble across shady/unprofessional/innacurate sources on a claim like that and I want to know specifically which sources informed your opinion.

    EDIT: You call us na?ve but yet there was a point in time where you also didn?t know this. No one is trying to disprove you, no need to get combative. We just wanna know what sources informed this opinion or if you?re just making assumptions.

    As I already said, Google is a fine place to start, as I'd never recommend actually visiting any of these places.
     
    You're missing the point :v I'm asking for the sources you found that specifically informed your belief to the point where it'd convince you that everyone would know that this is an issue. I could Google this topic and find literally millions of articles that fail to prove or fail to convince me that this is an issue, or I could even find ones that counter your argument entirely. I want to know what sources you're using to inform your statement. This is a basic discussion rule that's really not that difficult to follow if you're actually trying to talk to someone instead of arguing with them as if they're trying to disprove you.

    Nevertheless, since you decided to be needlessly difficult about this, I did Google it and it seems quite a few do have prostitution problems. Specifically, Reuters wrote about a report on this and it's actually pretty surprising. I've never visited massage parlors or heard this issue brought up before, so this is definitely something I'm glad I'm aware of now. (It's also worth noting that I even found a search website for "adult asian parlors" advertising escorts and the like. Kinda of crazy how out in the open this is)

    I went in to one once for a wholly unrelated issue than a massage (I wanted to talk about the back alley behind the shop) and the lady there barely spoke English and started getting feely which really startled me so I left.

    Then I googled it and found out 100% of the Asian ones are prostitution fronts. Some do use human trafficking too.

    The only legitimate massage places are not associated with anything Asian. They usually call themselves spas or anything but "massage parlor".

    If they're Asian and in a run down place, bet money they're shady.
