Just remember these where done in 1995. They never knew that Pokemon would be the next big thing so they didn't put much work into the sprites in both Green and Red.

And yes, some of those sprites look very half-assed; like Mew's. Magicarp's looks pretty good, wut da heck?

I never played green, but in red nd blue, I actually never noticed how they looked bad. They only looked bad when the newer games came out! xD

Green's Ekans looks like a freaky duck\snake... thing, Beedrill... umm, I won't go there, and Eevee looks like osme old man.

Green's Scyther and Fearow actually don't suck so bad. The Aerodactyl actually looks better than what we got, too.

Bulbasaur - the mouth is silly but the rest is overall okay
Ivysaur - ...flower bigger than head...
Venusaur - ...flower on a mechanic spring...
Charmander - He had a plastic operation to look like dino.
Charmeleon - A cool sprite with too big feet.
Charizard - No comment, 5/10 sprite heh...
Squirtle - Oh my... Too round head...
Wartortle - Someone cutted his tongue.
Blastoise - Blastoise with Cloyster's shell. WHAT?!
Caterpie - He really looks like a PIE...
Metapod - He needs to wear glasses.
Butterfree - Overshaded bug with too big wings.
Weedle - Okay... After all...
Kakuna - I've never seen a Kakuna with even very small hands...
Beedril - Another overshaded bug.

Ohh, I remember many of those sprites from Pok?mon Red actually, especially Mew. I always thought it was deformed. You did forget one of the worst, though. I remember catching this Articuno:
