...I read somewhere a while back that there's a way to get Pokemon like Golem or Porygon2 without trading with someone else or using the action replay. Could someone link me to the right thread?

Unsure where that thread is... basically, you offer up the Pokemon you want to evolve up on the GTS - do it for a 'unfair' trade so there's less chance of it being nabbed by someone.
Then, go and serach for any Pokemon and complete a trade on the GTS. After doing so, recall the Pokemon you put up (go to Summery and take it off the GTS) - when the 'pokeball flying back to you' animation finishes, it should evolve.

Think that's pretty much it - correct me if I'm wrong people. Should be it however.

You're talking about the GTS method. It's basically trading with yourself lol. Go to the FAQ, there's a full guide
