And I highly recommend that you play the older Pokémon games, especially Black and/or White and its sequel, Black 2 and/or White 2!
They are excellent games, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience of playing them!

I doubt anyone would judge you for starting playing Pokemon on more recent generations, it's never to late to start playing Pokemon!
I myself never played the Sw/Sh games, actually, gen 8 is the only generation of Pokemon games that I didn't play yet, would really like trying it out someday...
The gen 5 games (B/W, B2/W2) are actually very good, hope you're enjoying them, what is your favorite pokemon from Unova?
