Ideas for a Digimon RPG

One of the things that's always ticked me off about Digimon video games is that they do a terrible job of storytelling, especially when compared to the anime. I also noticed that Digimon Worlds Dawn and Dusk are (unlike the anime) strikingly similar to Pokemon RPGs in one specific regard: they both involve assembling a team of fighting monsters. Anyone who has watched Digimon Adventure/02 knows that this not what Digimon is about at all. Digimon are not generic fighters who follow a tamer around simply because the tamer feels like kicking butt.

To address this issue, I'm thinking about making a Digimon RPG that is done in the style of (but not with the same characters/story as) the anime. I'm thinking that it should contain more adventure aspects than repetitive combat sequences. In fact, I'm thinking about removing random monster encounters altogether.

To make character development more interactive, I was thinking about a conversation system based partially on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Basically, when confronted with a decision the player will often have to choose whether the character's response should reflect introversion/extroversion, thinking/feeling, etc. The ranges of responses that a character can make will depend on the decisions he's made in the past. For example: If a character mainly made introverted decisions early in the game, it will be harder for him to think about other people later in the game. A basic model for this system is attached as a JPG.

As for the story, I'm thinking about having the main conflict be between the three fundamental types of Digimon: Data, virus, and vaccine. I'm planning on making the differences between the types be more defined. To do that, I'm thinking about making a distinct predator/prey relationship between the virus and data types. Likewise, most vaccines consider the viruses to be a sort of a scourge, and consider it their duty to rid the digital world of them. The data types, however, worry that the vaccines are overzealous and will try to dominate all forms of digital life. Many data type Digimon are considering assimilating the vaccines into the data type by destroying the properties that make vaccines unique. The protagonist of the story will be a human, whom all three types consider to be a sort of potential savior. The player will have to decide over time with which type, if any, he sides with. There will be many possible outcomes. The story could end with one type achieving dominance, with the main character emerging as the ruler of all three types, or with all three types being convinced to cooperate. Whether the established authority at the end of the story is benevolent or tyrannical will also depend on the player's decisions over time.

The most important thing I'd like to achieve with this game is a complex way of making decisions. When I say that, I mean that the player should not know the long term effects of his individual actions. I don't like simple yes/no prompts that cause a character to become either a saint or some kind of neo-nazi madman.

I have RPG Maker XP, and sufficient programming knowledge to do scripting. What I don't have much experience or talent with is art. If you'd like some kind of artistic position in this project, whether it be music or sprites/tiles, feel free to PM me. I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions.
