Just clearing out my old stuff and found my old pokemon gameboy collection:

Red, Blue, yellow, gold, silver, crystal, sapphire, ruby, fire red, leaf green and even pokemon pinball and pokemon trading card game.

Brought back so many happy memories and TBH I have gone off all the newer video games such as CoD and Fifa.

But obviously buying the relevant gameboy's to play on them isn't what I'm wanting as I want to play on them with and against others to trade and battle, etc...

So is there a place (or places) online with a good number of players across these games with the capability to trade/battle etc. And if there are a few which is the best one?

    Kind regards

    Chris Taylor

It depends if you want to battle or if you want to adventure.
There are two battle simulators I know of Pokemon Showdown, Pokemon Online.
10 years ago I used to play a MMO of pokemon. I believe that site has shut down, but there may be others to adventure, and explore.

Like the last poster, I would recommend Pokemon Showdown for online battling (with formats for different generations). I haven't tried Pokemon Online, so I can't comment on that one.

If you're looking to trade with actual people, an MMO probably isn't what you're looking for (plus, I don't know of any decent ones right now anyway; the last one I tried ended up being virus-ridden). There's no way to trade/battle with people online via the older games, but if you wanted to invest in a 3DS (or 2DS) and one of the newer, wifi-compatible games (X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire), I personally think the mix of nostalgia, interaction with others, and new adventures offsets the startup cost. (Plus, once you have a 3DS, you could buy a $10 digital copy of Red, Blue, or Yellow for added nostalgia, though I think those only offer local wireless trading.)

If you're looking for people to trade with, there's a pretty good community here (check out the trading portion of the forums), and a lot of people battle as well. This forum seems friendlier/more supportive to me than some of the other ones I've seen, so especially if you're new and just getting up to speed on all of the changes to Pokemon over the past several years, it would probably be a good place to start.

If you want to trade or battle in person, I think the Pokemon website also has a list of local clubs and events you could check out, depending on where you live.

If you're going to invest in a 2DS or 3DS I would recommend either a 2DS or 3DS XL. I prefer the 2DS (I don't own one, but I played on both 2DS, and 3DS). I didn't like how my finger smudges were left on the 3DS 2DS reminds me of the GBA.

There are also 3DS's with Pokemon Red/Blue face plates. As for which game to get. It is really up to personal preference. If you want a new experience go for X/Y. I enjoyed running through that game, and love the customize-able features, and friend safari. If you want to play Hoenn again go to OR/AS.
I had a friend who couldn't play ORAS because he lived through that story over 20 times. I found XY to be a too easy (which isn't a bad thing). It'll be a while before you reach gyms 1 and 2. Just enjoy the scenery. There isn't a lot to do post game, but you do get gifts for completing the game. Sadly you won't start with a Torchic/Mega Blazekin, but I bet you could find someone on here who wouldn't mind giving you a level 5 pokemon of your choice. The pokemon community is very welcoming.

If nostagia is what you want, and a game with real post game content ORAS may be good for you.

This year nintendo is doing wifi events every month for legendaries, make sure you get yours.
