This is a question that has nagged me for a while, and I realize there isn't necessarily a single answer to it, but I've been wondering what you guys consider to be the pivotal factors for a pokemon team.

I don't usually do any kind of competitive play, so I don't mind tiers or EVs for example, I just try to blitz my way to victory by using STAB movesets whenever possible, while minding type-matching.

I'm aware though that for a lot of people EVs and breeding are an important part of creating a strong team, although I don't have the patience for any of that.

So guys, what are some of the general approaches you take when team building? I'd like to hear everyone's opinions and maybe refine my own style in the process.

Having a diverse moveset on all of your Pokemon is a necessity. I generally like to have each pokemon with 1 STAB move, at least one move that covers a weakness to itself, and 1 Stat boosting move if possible/useful/necessary. Also, if more than 2 or 3 members of a team share a common weakness, then a move to cover that weakness on 2 or 3 pokemon of the team could be a big help, but not necessary.

STAB moves is a real biggie for me as well. It's kind of a standard, imo. Just a clean-cut easy-going move that will hit big for you, even if neutrally.

EV's are just irritating to me. Even in-game, I try really hard to keep me Pokemon "EV trained" to a degree. But competitively, they're huge. You really want to maximize a Pokemon's stats and their potential, such as Gyarados's monstrous attack or Blissey's HP.

When I train my Pokemon I:
-Make sure the IVs of the stats I'm taking advantage of are 20-31
-EV train the Pokemon with the right stats
-Have a move set that suits its strategy

*High IV's (20+ in most stats, 25+ in the two stats I intend to EV train).
    *Proper EV training.
*Taking advantage of base stats (i.e., give special attacking moves to Pokemon with high Special Attack).
*Diverse moveset with at least one being a powerful STAB move. I try to take advantage of the STAB's of both types for dual-types.
*Support moves for some members with lower Attack/Special Attack scores.

When I set up a team, I try to keep track of EV's. It's mostly a passing thing, because once set and built, it doesn't need much work, except for the continuous stat grinding.
I'd say though another important thing is getting a combination of type diversity and and also weakness covering.
That's how I set up my teams, but I do most of that stuff to battle online.

    Uhm, I guess;

    - Iv's (I go for Flawless/Highest Hidden Power)
    - A decent movepool and a diverse one at that.
    - Decent typing meaning for a nice type STAB coverage
    - Finding type diversity throughout the team
    - Making sure I don't have too many crippling 4x weaknesses.

That's it really, I don't really Ev train since I use PO for battling.
