Alright, so recently I have got an infraction for Off-Topic/SPAM for Mini-modding.

    Reason: Off-topic posting / SPAM
    April 14th, 2010 07:04 PM by Hiiro 0 / July 13th, 2010 07:04 PM

Now, I didn't mini-mod, I just looked at the post and I was like "...Shouldn't this be in the Wi-fi center?" and Hiiro decided to make me an infraction. Now, I wasn't really mini-modding, I was just wondering if it belongs in the Wi-fi center because I have never been there before (Well...except the quick-trade thread and some random topic I made when I first joined o_o") Becides, wouldn't this be mini-modding?

Dude--This belongs in the Wi-Fi Center

All I'm trying to say is that I didn't mean to mini-mod, just trying to figure out if this should be in the Wi-fi center.

(Yea, I made a BIG deal about this, but I want you to hear my side :))

To be honest, saying "Shouldn't this go ____?" is no different than saying "This goes ____." You're still not saying anything else of value in the thread and once the thread is either moved or left alone, your post is spam in the end result anyway.

Especially if you're unsure of something (though it's best to do this regardless), just report a thread if you think it's out of place. It's the moderator's job to tell the OP that something is wrong.

Yea, I wasn't sure that "Shouldn't this go ____?" would be the same as "This goes ____."

    \REQUESTS TO CLOSE

    Thanks.

I don't get this mini-mod thing. No offense. The mods might not be always there to move/close inappropriate threads.

I'd like to call this action "helping / giving direction."

Still, it's the mods' decision so.. meh.

Just wanted to give out my piece of mind on this. c:

Well, it's spammy, and off-topic to post in a thread and say "This thread goes in ____"

If that's all you have to say about the topic, then you should click the report button on the first post and say that in the report. More often than not, the moderator will either agree or disagree with your suggestion given in the report and act accordingly without any action on you.

I'd think it depends on what section your posting in, how long you've been around and how often you've done it before. A good Moderator does keep at least a mental tally of these things, and takes them into consideration before taking action.

That being said, if you're doing it in a forum full of newbies who will also 'follow your lead' and make unnecessary comments on the offending post/thread, then I think it is infractable, especially if you've been around long enough to read the rules!

I think you should get an infraction if you've done it before. But I guess that's not up to me, now is it? :3
But Mini-modding is kind of a bad thing. I remember when I was new here, someone mini-modded and myself and a few others just piggybacked off, mini-modding some more.
    Not pretty. :x

It's never okay, imo. It is not the job of the user to direct someone as to where a thread goes. If the mini-mod gives the right answer... um... okay, then what? The thread is going to be moved there anyway and the mod will (usually) drop in to mention that they've moved the thread to the proper location. OP will realize their error at that time and all the mini-mod has done is make the mod repeat them. But if the mini-mod is wrong? They've confused OP and now the mod has to do extra work in correcting said mini-mod. It's not worth it either way.

I don't mind it too much if someone posts a helpful, on-topic post and at the very end tacks on a "by the way, you've posted in the wrong forum" message. At least then, the rest of their post is still worth keeping once the modwork has been done. But otherwise? It's just spam and unneeded. It's not the members' place to point that stuff out--it's the mod's. If all you can reply with is "this is in the wrong place", then your post is definitely considered spam once the thread is in the right place.

This should be the official stance on mini-mods by the staff but every mod interprets the rules slightly differently. Some will be really lax on mini-modding (I know I am in the Pixel Art forums, for example, because there is no dedicated mod atm) and others will, as you know, infract for it.

Closing this now because I don't see any real discussion coming from it. :s

The problem with saying "this goes here" is that the OP might think they need to immediately rectify their mistake and thus remake the thread in the appropriate forum. In that scenario, we have two of the same thread. Even if one of them gets closed, the other one is taking up unnecessary space. It's just easier if a mod handles it and moves the original thread as opposed to a new one being made and the staff member moving the original not being aware of it.

    EDIT: Erica go away. D=
