The possible outcomes of our actions changes with each one we make. 'Destiny' is the concept of these outcomes due to the actions, to me at least. Under this guise it becomes a simple word to express result, so my answer is no, destiny in the popular prophetic sense doesn't exist.

オレンジ just took the words right out of my keyboard. Great post.

I have always believed that every action you take influences your "Fate". You have a set Fate, but with one little change, whether it be eating pancakes instead of waffles, or to adopt a child, become a murderer, whatever, it all affects that "Fate". I don't believe there is or ever was any sort of set destiny that you are bound to at birth, your actions and the person you are will mold what your fate (or destiny.) becomes.

I don't believe in fate.
I've always thought if you do something, it is out of your own personal choice. There isn't any force that controls everything that happens.
I just can't imagine any special force causing me to do what I do.

Your destiny is your truest, deepest desire. There isn't anything that happens against the will of anything.

What about children that die during infancy of malnutrition, inherited diseases, etc.?

Bill Moyers asked Joseph Campbell a similarquestion in The Power of Myth:

The Power of Myth said:
Campbell: That's the helpful thing about the Indian idea of karma. Your life is the fruit of your own doing. You have no one to blame but yourself.

Moyers: But what about chance? A drunken driver turns the corner and hits you. That isn't your fault. You haven't done that to yourself.

Campbell: From that point of view, is there anything in your life that did not occur as by chance? This is a matter of being able to accept chance. The ultimate backing of life is chance -- the chance that your parents met, for example! Chance, or what might seem to be chance, is the means through which life is realized. The problem is not to blame or explain but to handle the life that arises. Another war has been declared somewhere, and you are drafted into an army, and there go five or six years of your life with a whole new set of chance events. The best advice is to take it all as if it had been of your intention -- with that, you evoke the participation of your will.

I think I understand more where you're coming from now. Thanks for the clarification (and the good quote).

I think that you create your own destiny, based on what you choose to say and do, and how you choose to act. Therefore, you don't really have a specific destiny created for you, and by changing how you act, you could change your destiny (....uh...-excuse the spelling-Ebeneezer Scrooge as an example maybe? But yeah, something along the lines of how he changed.)

No, there isn't...

Because if there's destiny, it's like "nothing is surprising anymore" because we all have a destined fate.

I don't, and i don't wanna, believe in it.

P.S. Peace!

Well, it depends. Some people live thier whole life and never have something amazing happen to them. But they don't completely know thier destiny, so there's no telling.

Of course there is destiny. If you do something today, it'll affect your future, whether it be good or bad. You can change it by intervening its course, through doing something opposite to what you're doing.
Your right-Something just controlls your life even though you could be doing what you want to,Destiny is like the path of your life changing whenever you do something bad or good. You may say im bonkers but i'll defend what i just said!

Human beings are so greatly influenced by external factors they cannot control that in many cases there seems to be an illusion of destiny.

Yes, we do have true free will when it comes down to it, but by manipulating external factors to a great enough degree, it is possible to influence people enough to achieve a desired result.

This is how it is possible for God to have a set plan for all of us without actually restricting our freedom - by changing variables and communicating with us.

I acutaly made a saying about this kind of thing.

"Destiny IS set in stone, but only YOU can hold the chishel..."

Well the future is never set in stone, I believe.

Yes, destiny can always be changed by free will. Destiny is not right there for you to walk into it.

That's so ... cheesy.

Lol I actually thought the quote was pretty good.
But yeah, I don't think about destiny much. The only reason I even mention it: because Star Wars has a lot of "destiny this, destiny that" in it. :/

It made me cringe XD
You base your epiphanies on star wars? :D
Destiny is such an un-known thing. Like the after life. People believe different things. But none of us are actually sure.

No, I don't base my epiphanies on Star Wars, I'm just saying xD
And destiny is an unknown thing. Does destiny exist? Does it? DOES IT?! DOES IT??!!
